Check this: Dwarf Fortress 2d [With Graphics]
« on: November 08, 2009, 04:31:55 pm »

I am in love with 2d version adventure mode.

Creatures do not appear "under" you when they ambush (like wolves in 3d), there're actual multi-store buildings, you can recruit soldiers easily and there're ruins with undead.

Thus for those who want to try how it "was", here's a version with graphics (since many people like to play with them).

>> Download <<

This archive packs a full version so you don't have to download anything else. Also it has a world where there's a ruin just besides a human town near the center of the map, thus you can easily fight undead and enjoy the old features.

There're errors because I haven't adapted all the files to 2d version (by errors I mean that your errorlog.txt will be filled with graphical stuff which is not present in 2d but doesn't break anything).

I will clean the files later and add the missing tiles (for various advisors and a ton of nobles who were in 2d), for now all animals and main races are in good conditions, go on, download and try it.

Actually Toady brings a lot of stuff from 2d to 3d already, so I am eager for the next release, but while we wait for it, why not to try? :)

P.S. Beware: crossbows are slower.

P.P.S. I am quite used to use these graphics, but I feel like I should put a credit here. The awesome tiles are by Sphr :).

What version is this? I don't like graphics mods, but I might download a vanilla one.

Oh, it says on the DFFD page. Nevermind.

I tried 2D once, Fortress mode was way too slow, but I never tried Adventure mode.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Adventure mode is much harder and fun. And in some cases more "complete". In any case, it's much more different and challenging.

You have those ruins where you are gonna die which are the challenge.
You can discover caves while running around the world map; and since the locations are enclosed the critters ARE in caves. The first cave I visited sent me a death as a cyclops + snakeman. Snakeman bit all of my teammates and they were paralyzed, and cyclops finished them.

OK, I've changed zombie graphics to fancier ones and added master_ versions for all the undead warriors.

I've updated it with 1.03 version. I forgot to put the .txt file for goblin/kobold graphics thus they were g :P.

Anyway, who doesn't want to re-download the whole thing, you need a "graphics_other.txt" file in your /raw/graphics/ folder with the following contents:

Never having played the 2D version, I thought I would give this a try. 1 minute in the game and I'm already down 2 dorfs due to cave-ins. Forgot that there was a limit to cavern size in the old version.

Will it be re-implemented in future versions?

I doubt with the new huge underground areas coming.
But you should definitely try the adventure mode :D.

it does seem much larger, more advanced and interesting. Slow though, because it automatically makes large sized regions. Are there any good mods for it?
