He could have given everyone the same starting point but stipulated that there shall be no actions for the first three turns. That gives everyone a chance to spread out or cluster together, depending on what they want to do.

Pikes can do 1 diagonal since they have a reach of 2, and a diagonal move is a move of two.

I think that if someone is attacked at ranged by a pike, the defender can still roll as normal, but if he doesn't kill the pike user if he wins the roll.

Proposition: But the pike user, instead of being killed, is incapacitated (paralysed) for 1 round. There should be some drawback to losing a fight with a pike.

It's a fight you initiate though. With a ranged weapon like a crossbow.

If someone fights you, your pike is a 1d3 like a melee crossbow so you probably lose. Seems like a fair tradeoff.
