So ofter playing some easier rougelikes, I finally decided to start with Nethack.
Now I have some questions.

Which graphical version/tileset would you recommend for a beginner?
Doesn't need to be great, I just want some basic graphics for the environment/character/monsters/gear. It just has to fit the game.
Is there one which makes the complicated menues more comfortable? (for instance having to open the inventory, memorising the slot letter, closing it by klicking and then equipping it with a combination of wear-button + letter, is annoying)

And how do I change the keyboard layout?
I'm using the german one, which has some buttons on other positions.
I believe it's the OPTIONS=altkeyhandler:x option, but I don't know what to substitute x with.

You don't need to memorize inventory options. Hitting * should open a list of the relevant choices.

honestly, Its more "which you plan to get used to in the future" or,
how you will compete in a tournament where everything is ascii.

The irony is that theres several ascii fonts made by groups including IMB and only a few graphics tilesets.

I just want to play for fun.

Ingame turn on the numpad.
I assume your using the windows version. There should be a configuration file either in the cmd, or nearby in a text document.
Change numpad=0 to numpad=1.

This frees up certain keys, and allows easy diagonal movement.

No I mean the buttons on the american keyboard are on a different position, than on my german one.(Especially all special characters)

I personally like the tileset that comes with the game. Well, it came with the Windows download, I'm not sure if you have it or not.

There's Vulture's Eye, which is isometric. You could always try that.

Well our @ for instance is shift+q while 'yours' is shift+1 and that goes for most of the other epecial characters.

I didn't knew there was a standard tileset in this game, which actually looks quite good.
I'm gonna stick with that.
