Is Gorjira even Tech Death? I always thought they were Djent.

Meshuggah is under Djent, far right.

I refuse to classify Meshuggah as djent. Djent is used to describe those shitty bands that copy Meshuggah, and I refuse to acknowledge their existence. One band isn't a genre.

 I tried looking for Opeth, which is classified as Progressive Death metal, but it isn't in either progressive or death.

 Gojira isn't Tech Death. Gojira is progressive. NO IT'S NOT DJENT SCREW YOU!

 And Gojira deserves more love. Much, much more.

They're too different from the other Tech Death bands. Their early songs were much deathier but the new songs are prog. Especially From Mars To Sirius.

Meh, metalcore gets a bad rap because so many metalheads associate it with its lamest screamo aspects (Underoath, Norma Jean, countless other bands with really long names that were popular among high school girls for 5 minutes in 2006).  But a listen to Between the Buried and Me, Converge, early Dillinger Escape Plan, or Botch will confirm, if one's ears allow them the "impure" thought, that there's actually some merit to the genre.  I say that even as a passionate fan of ambient black and noise/drone metal.

 Anyway, my tastes in metal went from Thrash to Groove to Progressive then went heavier and heavier. Now I don't get ear pains from extreme metal (Meshuggah is pretty much my favorite band), so I'd like to get recommendations for (lighter) Death and (heavier) Doom metal, since I can listen to it, but haven't found anything that sticks to me. I feel like I'm missing out a lot. Also, memorable epic riffs are a must. Preferred tempo is medium-slow, interesting time signatures and composition would be a big bonus (since you know, Meshuggah), so would low guitar tuning (once again, Meshuggah) and low amount or none of electronic sound effects.

That's actually pretty nice. I remember the first time I listened to them they seemed really soft, but that may just be since I just clicked the first song that comes up on youtube when searching for them.

Yeah, it is subjective. That's the lightest death I've heard. Pretty cool, but heavier would be nice.

MDB Is nice in that their songs tend to cover a range of speeds rather than the slow grind that one expects.
Going from 'Deeper Down' or 'The Fever Sea' to 'The Cry of Mankind' is kind of a musical palette cleanser.

Septic Flesh - Sangreal

The guitars and rhythm elements are absolutely perfect. The growling is great too, but I tend to dislike death metal bands that use clean vocals alongside growls. I'll be looking into these guys more.

 Haven't checked the others yet, this is too damn good to switch before finishing. Thanks!

 Also, did some quick research on death metal. I don't really want "lighter" (turns out it's lighter in general than I thought. Well, it's probably since I had a phobia of death metal since I tried listening to it for the first time). I just don't want the stuff that belongs to the brutal death metal or deathgrind or whatever genres.

 Also, last time I heard Amon Amarth, I thought it's the heaviest shit ever and almost gave me a heart attack. Tried listening to it again. It's great.

 Edit: Checked the other band. It's ok, but not something I'd like to look more into.

As for other Septic Flesh songs, I'd highly recommend Lovecraft's Death if you disliked the clean vocals.
Honestly, I rather enjoy them; it's something different for me. I've been listening to a lot of grind lately though, so that may be why.

Oh, I understand black metal and I value unique metal bands. RC is just not the feel and style I prefer.

Edit: So, apparently most of SF's songs are much more orchestral. Never really liked orchestral metal, but I guess I can get used to it due to the compensation with deathyness. Sangreal, though, is 99% perfect. Remove the clean vocals and it's completely perfect. For its style and feel of course. Can't have a perfect song for every style.

In other news, not long ago, I was on kind of a punk kick.
Thing is, I hate most punk.
Sure, The Misfits and The Distillers are alright, but most of it has turned into pop-y bs. (My opinion of course.)

Oddly, it seems that metal has taken up the 'spirit' of punk more than any punk band.
If I look at Lamb of God as a straight-up metal band, it's merely 'alright'. As a punk-esque group however, it takes on a completely different dynamic.

Mayhaps I'm just odd.
