I remain firmly in the eclectic camp. Apparently, I care more about the lyrics of songs than the music (although it seems the ones with good words also have good music.) I've got Trooper and These Color's won't Run set to play pretty often (both by the Maidens).

Eh... the deal with 'Nu-Metal' but more accurately any experimental genre when it is as such, is that they sort of tend to make a lot of weird avant-garde changes at once rather than trying one at a time to see what works and what doesn't- okay, maybe that's just me being an engineer, but whatever.

I like Ensiferum/Wintersun (mostly) and the like of finnish metal stuff, and some symphonic metal... but what I really want to see is something that adequately combines cool jazz with metal (a softer, melancholy, but still metal). At any rate, studies* show that if you like metal, ought to like this.

Brütal Legend for PS3 - Brütal Legend follows the story of Eddie Riggs (voiced by Jack Black and named after Eddie the Head, the mascot of Iron Maiden, and Derek Riggs, the artist who created Eddie), who is the world's best roadie for the world's worst "heavy metal" band, Kabbage Boy. Much of the game takes place in a world inspired by heavy metal music, created by, according to the game's mythology, Ormagöden, The Fire Beast, Cremator of the Sky, and Destroyer of the Ancient World. In this alternate world, the human race is enslaved by Doviculus, Emperor of the Tainted Coil, (voiced by Tim Curry) and his glam metal human minion, General Lionwhyte (voiced by Rob Halford) (whose hair is so big "and luscious" that he uses it to fly). Leading the fight against Doviculus are a small band of human resistance fighters with whom Eddie joins forces: Lars Halford (voiced by Zach Hanks), his sister Lita (voiced by Kath Soucie), and Ophelia (voiced by Jennifer Hale), whom Eddie takes a romantic interest in. Their group is later joined by the stage manager Mangus (Alex Fernandez), the bass-playing healer Kill Master (voiced by Lemmy Kilmister), the motorcycle-riding Fire Baron (also voiced by Halford), and the Amazonian Rima (voiced by Lita Ford). I am a metal enthusiast, though I'm not an elitist. I don't try to classify my feelings, and I don't care what other people prefer to listen to. Into Dragonforce? Good for you. I'll be over here.

I do have a friend who is very adamant about the various sub-genres of metal, who is very, very likely to post in this thread upon seeing it.

My personal favorite metal bands right now are Metallica, Alice in Chains, Disturbed, Korn, and Iron Maiden. System of a Down is also great, but I overlistened to it and became somewhat jaded. Serj's solo album is really good, and I still hope they get back together.

First off, I must say this.

THANK GOD!!! SOMEONE FINALLY MADE THIS THREAD!!!!

Now, onto the actual talk of metal. I listen to just about any and all forms of metal. Even metal that I mock, such as dragon force, gives me joy. I personally find Nu-metal a label given to bands that have metal roots but deviate from the traditional metal sound.

I'm slightly annoyed by Death Metal, but I will listen to it in small doses.

I am undecided as far as a favorite metal band goes (Iron Maiden, Metallica, Fozzy, and Judas Priest keep switching). I'm also one of the few people in my area that don't disregard anything Metallica made after the "Black" album as trash just because it is new.

A quick list of bands I enjoy(and my favorite song by said band):

I do have some trouble deciding if a few bands are metal or hard rock.
Example:
Nickelback- I find them slightly metal but I can't honestly bring myself to call them so.
AC/DC- I think they are hard rock but peole keeping calling them metal, it makes me doubt myself.
Kiss- Hard rock in my opinion but they are called metal bands by most people.

My local record store hates me. I can't ever find Ghost Reveries by Opeth, and it's the only album of theirs I don't own. The metal section in HMV is tiny and mostly full of corporate, commercial trash or classic metal I already own.

Yeah... I'll keep my thoughts to myself on this as a token of good will.

Though it's Avant-Garde Metal, I can't go through a topic without mentioning Waltari. What the hell is going on with this. Yeah! Yeah! Die! Die! A Death Metal Symphony in Deep C is utter madness, and I love it for that. It opens with only orchestral elements. Until the electric guitar plays a few simple notes loudly toward the end of the first song, you might have thought you bought the wrong album.

Throughout the album and within the same song you can hear, each distinct rather than being tacked on for the novelty, orchestra, metal, rapping, and vocals both opera and growly and harsh. As well as the rapping vocals. Each of the characters in the album's story feature a different sort of style. John Doe seems to take up the rap-like parts, as heard in Move. The Angel takes up the opera singing, and the Computer takes up the harsher vocals (having "The Struggle for the Life and Death of Knowledge" to itself, nearly).

I think wikipedia describes it best. "However, for most of the album, the music varies between "symphony orchestra with a backing death metal band" and "death metal band with a backing orchestra"."

Despite this it manages to have an entirely underwhelming album cover that features what I'm fairly certain is a lensflare.

I recommend, if you listen to only one song from it, try "The Sign" or possibly "The Top". Each song is so different that it's impossible to really consider the album without hearing the whole thing.

I suspect I have much the same opinion of these bands as you, but for once I want to avoid derailing and arguments.
