The problem before was that you had duplicate entries in two text files, both with ID "DWARF". You get weird results and you were lucky to start as humans, you could have a purring maggot fortress instead.

Always check errorlog.txt in your main folder, it shows you your errors.

Well, despite being able to assign them labors, they refuse to do them.  Weird.

You didn't even need to copy them over to creature_domestic_standard.txt.  The name of the file defines next to nothing (you just need it so that when the files are arranged alphabetically by name and alphabetically by object type [separately] there is no change in the order).

I'm guessing you put in something the OP didn't.  He said that he put in [COMMON_DOMESTIC], but I got the impression that [PET] interfered with the process, based on his previous post commenting on it.

You shouldn't copy them, or they won't be the same creature and do jobs.

The trick is that the game thinks that those "animals" are still a part of your creature entity, thus they are in the military and job lists.

You just put [COMMON_DOMESTIC] in the CREATURE:DWARF section in creature_standard.txt, that's all.
I think you also may add a weight capacity and [PACK_ANIMAL] so the dwarven wagons would be pulled by dwarves.

No, that's [WAGONPULLER] ([WAGON_PULLER]?).  [PACK_ANIMAL] just makes them carry stuff.

I'll be sure to copy the relevent raw entries up here when I have had a chance to fiddle with them a little more.

You don't need to copy the dwarf entry to common_domestic.txt, just leave it where it is.

Adding pet or pack_animal prevents the dwarves from working properly, have not tried wagon_puller yet.
with one of the tags, pet I think but am not sure, you can use an dwarf therapist to view and assign labors and they will perform work, but I have not found a way to view thoughts and preferences, activate military or manage nobility with pet tag.

Not 100%, but it looks like my tame dwarves are buried and do not produce butcherable corpses.

Yeah, I couldn't get to butcher their corpses too.

Modding Dwarves to be purchasable was pretty fun to figure out -- we did it over in this thread a while back:

http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=43753.0

The [trAINABLE] tag doesn't remove a Dwarfs ability to perform labors as far as I know -- I embarked with 7 standard dwarves and a few dozen PET dwarves and then assigned a War Dwarf as the Sheriff of my fort and it didn't seem to glitch too badly.

So far it seems that only pet creatures from your Civilization will perform labors for you though, since the [INTELLIGENT] Lizardmen I tested would only Hunt or Fish & couldn't be given weapons/equipment.

doesnt sound to my like slavery at all, sounds more like hiring extra help or giving land grants to dwarves. :)

Who's to say only 7 dwarves would go to make an entire town? I figure you'd need atleast 15 to make a decent settlement in a year.

Can trained war peasants be assigned like war dogs? I'm envisioning a battalion of unarmed peasants fearlessly accompanying a champion into battle.

The value of a dwarf?  How many z-levels did the body parts get scattered over? =)

As far as I've seen yes.

Yeah, I couldn't get to butcher their corpses too.

Grrr. I am having difficulties reproducing some of my results. WIth some combinations, I was able to butcher war peasants but their meat was not edible, nor was their leather tannable. Also note that war peasants can not have thier labors adjusted by dwarf therapist (I think some utilities can do it though). I am also getting issues where I can not consistantly generate worlds with buyable dwarves, it works sometimes but not others with the same raws.

Maybe it's the ethics causing the problem?
