I'm pretty well prepared for sieges so most of the death and mutilation tends to happen to any slow civvies. I've got a blind butcher who's the fortress invalid.

In my past forts I would say civilian, but I'm growing more aware of my "Civil defense" plan. I'd have to say military because most of the newer troops that didn't get the chance to spar-up get slaughtered by goblin champions. But that's getting fixed by my "recruit safety" plan. So realy my deaths are insanly low, and people don't usually die by sparring as long as I can keep up my wooden weapon supplies from the elves. Also I only recruit people with good stats like "Ub3r7331 strength" or "god-like agility" or maybe "Armok-worthy tough" or maybe just a little bit lower than that...

Civilian.  Every single moody dwarf wants raw glass.  I don't have it.  No sand whatsoever.  It's reached the point that I'm considering modifying the types of soil I do have to avoid the "death trap" migrant message.

I've also had a terrible string of nobles on this map.  The first Baroness asked for large gems, so she got to pull the lever of shame.  (As in, "It's a Shame you have to fall in the magma pipe.)  The second demanded bismuth bronze items that I couldn't make, then ordered my leveling armorer hammered.  He died from the first hit, so I starved her out of spite.  My current Countess is now demanding adamantine items.  Technically I've got some on the map, but if I humor her she'll probably ask for some piece of adamantine furniture.  I'm not going to waste that many strands on her, so she's probably going to have an accident.

Several other demands have gone un-met, and in spite of having plenty of cages, every single discipline order has been a beating by one of my legendary wrestler guards, or a hammering.  I've lost half a dozen useful dwarfs that way but I refused to kill the mayor that was responsible for it because he was my expedition leader.  This is the first time I've ever been happy to see my expedition leader ousted as mayor.

Edit: Yes, my cages are jails.  The justice screen shows 19/10 cages.  More than enough.

What would you do if seven small, beared men marched into your home and started to dig out a city in your basement?

It is the military's job to die protecting civillians.

Tends to be Military for me. Probably because a large portion of my fortress is always part of the military so all it takes is one massacre.

Though it is always a close call. Id doubt the difference would ever be greater then 10 dwarves.

Extremely dangerous  to be a dwarf, because they never know when I might call upon them to do something incredibly stupid or lethal, like me drafting them into the  military and telling them to go wrestle a champion elf, or releasing all my psycho dwarfs so I can get to my food stockpiles I locked with them by accident.

Probably about 90% of the casualties are civilians. This is due to either to ambushes, drowning, or the entry way dance. All military goes through an excessive training regimen (above +5 in everything just to start) and relies heavily on marksdwarves behind fortifications. Melee dwarves are minimum legendary+1 in shield use and their weapon of choice, while wielding exceptional (at a minimum) steel weapons and armor. Goblin gibs everywhere.

Civilians. My current fort's first two deaths were both dwarves trying to drink from the river and getting drowned by carp.

Interesting.  So it would seem that it is safest for a dwarf in the average fort to be a kobold.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.

My civilians constitute about 90% of deaths, as i have no standing army. Rather i draft civilians when time comes, and have one or two guards WITHIN the fortress to bash disobedient dorfs.

Sounds about right, actually. Every kobold I've seen around my forts has run away as soon as it got spotted.

That would be as deadly to the wielder as to anyone else!  You'd sever your own arm at the first swing!  It's perfect!

I've recorded for a year now and I have this results
Civilian: 100% :  1 TOTAL : (Nish Erithrul MALE ; COD- Strange mood resource failure)
Military: 0% None killed
Dwarf: 100%
Kobold: ? ? ?
So... Yea... Civilians go through moods...

Oddly enough... my current Fort has reached its population max (110+), dealt with several strange moods, Gobbo invaders and a Megabeast... and I still haven't lost a single Dwarf.

As a general rule, though, most of my deaths are Civilians (due to failed moods or being caught outside), with Military sparring accidents in second place. Actual battlefield deaths are rather rare.
