Post your: Mega-structures!
« on: November 07, 2009, 07:51:54 pm »

Hi, sort of new here (haven't posted in a few months, and even then, I had only posted once). Post your mega-structures! These can be anything from huge statues made purely of Adamantine to a giant Sandstone pyramid, to an amazing labyrinth complete with traps. If you like, I know (and I'm sure most of you do, too) of a easy-to-use, great-looking 3d visualizer called Visual Fortress. Go ahead and download it (It's way better than 3Dwarf, which is a pain in the ass and doesn't look nearly as good as Visual Fortress)

Here's my Pyramid, made 100% from Chalk, except for two iron statues at the entrance:

What mega-structures have you made?

Also made of all chalk except for the gold statues and gems windows. I sadly only had 19z levels to work with. Of course now that its done I'm at a loss as to what to do with it.

Behold ELDERMANOR
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Built before the newer version of Dwarf3D that makes 'Fortifications' so cool looking.
Currently I am in the process of adding fortifications to all the top parts.

This is what it looked like in the old visualizer

Well my efforts have been blown out of the water. To the design board!

Reminds me of one of the Order buildings from Ground Control for some reason. Very nice

i made a giant dam, lots of nice looking symetrical bedrooms and shopping areas. the entire place was getting made up for adventure mode, so a lot of the outdoors stuff is less impressively huge, as i was thinking of making it look good in the DF graphics.

link to the map archive, wherever the save went for this i had advanced forwards considerably in a lot of places.
http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-5254-friendlyworks

these are pics i took ages and ages ago with 3dwarf. as the dam was close to the map it was really hard to get a shot that showed how high it was.

getting filled -

slightly more full -

even more full -

aaaand here is a shot of the brook running completely dry, which was the case for the many in game years it took for the dam to fill up. every summer the top 2 z levels of the dam would boil away from the intense heat on the map i was on. the brook went on to flow past a goblin fortress, which would probably give them the reason for the enormous yearly attacks i was getting beyond the usual "we hate dwarfs".

does this new image viewer work for the df 40d# editions? i use them exclusively now, and i would love to get some coloured picutures of the for that goes with the dam, its mostly in bauxite.

If you mean VisualFortress, that works great with 40d16.

[Sorry if everything looks weird, my integrated chipset doesn't support shadows/lighting.]

Welcome to the Dwarves' Republic of Giftedlabored, the place where your hard daily labor is always well-appreciated, even if not rewarded! Nestled between two mountains like an Elf chunk stuck in a wolf's teeth, Giftedlabored has all the utilities you expect from a modern fortress, including a bottomless pit for easy garbage disposal. Not only that, but the local magma pipe is right around the corner!

If you are a visitor, then you are most likely a capitalist bastard marked for destruction merchant or trader of some sort. Which of course means that you will be taking the precarious sky-road to the trade depot! Made of microcline and orthoclause, and towering 11 z-levels above the ground, the sky-road is a sight to see!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If you survive long enough continue your journey into the fortress itself, you will come across the trade depot. Housed in an elevated structure, again made of microcline and orthoclause, the trade depot sits high above the future meeting hall.

Did I forget to mention the friendly wildlife? Why, just the other day, a trader had a completely unexpected, but fully appreciated visit from a Giant Cave Swallow. Why, he was so completely thrilled that he jumped right off the trading area at the first sight of the friendly birdie! His companions left later that season, overjoyed that they obtained a box of masterfully-crafted bone crafts. Praise the resourcefulness of Giftedlabored!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Oh, you want more? Just can't get enough? Well, here's another view. You can now clearly see the stilts, built by the tireless labors of common, downtrodden, completely unskilled working-class dwarves. See what marvels common workers can create when they unite! It may also be of interest to the visitor that the entire structure measures 13 z-levels from top to bottom.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The slaves' comrades' rooms are on the bottom four levels of the great hall. The filthy nobles Big Brothers are housed on the sixth level, from where they lord it over their underlings offer emotional support and constructive criticism. The unoccupied fifth level has been reserved for the future execution chambers Ministry of Love.

Now that you have seen the Trade Depot, perhaps you would like to examine some of our weapon traps in closer detail...?

This is Pickwonder.

The surface structure is a basalt and alunite pyramid, with a green glass dome. The walls of the pyramid contain all of the housing, with the military in the base. The pyramid is hollow, with the Trade Depot in the center surrounded by Gold and Silver bridges.

Underneath the citadel is another pyramid, this one carved out of the earth with the surrounding ground hollowed out. This is where the work occurs.

There is a large hole in the ground, at the moment, waiting for the construction of a giant iron tower, built from the melted armour and weapons of invaders. I currently have about half of the map excavated.

My only true megaconstruction so far has been a clear glass pyramid filled entirely with magma (pumped in from below). It turned out that the tallest I could possibly make it (without doing some extensive strip mining) was 23 Z-levels.

http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-7349-wasprag

My current fortress, Rhymestakes, will be a 47x47 cast obsidian tower (to be carved into a large circular tower with 4 round pillars in the corners) in the middle of a 3x3 tropical moist broadleaf forest embark. It'll still be a few more years before I finish building the mold (entirely out of green glass blocks, population limited to 60).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The Colossus of Ironsavages stands 16 z-levels in height on a platform suspended above the local volcano, a statue of a dwarf with an axe in one hand, holding aloft a mug of dwarven ale in the other. Constructed from obsidian blocks aside from the axe, mug and the dwarf's beard, which are gold bars. The statue is partially hollow, such that captured orcs and goblins can be dragged up narrow stairs inside and thrown into a chamber behind the mouth, with fortifications forming the statue's teeth.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

An especially noteworthy feature is the clever magma-ductwork which allows molten rock to be pumped up through the statue to pour in a fiery cascade from the mouth; any captives trapped within the statue at such times are immersed in magma, and their immolation wreathes the statue's head in clouds of smoke.
