While on the topic of glass, is it possible to get sand on an originally non-sand map?

i tried draining my ponds/ rivers but no sand. just wondering if there is a way,
because my current fortress has a lot of precious gems to make some nicely valued stuff

If you don't have sand, you don't have sand and there's nothing you can do to acquire glass since traders will never bring it.  If you want glass you'll have to find a new embark location or start cheating(utilities like Dtil come to mind).

Is that a plugin for Dtil? Anyways, you could also just add the [SOIL_SAND] tag to whatever soils you have, which I believe, does NOT require a regen.

There's a few bugs that can cause you to get soil layers where there shouldn't be any. Sometimes those can be sand. Other than that, no.

You could always just not expect every location to have everything, but where's the fun in that?

Granted, glass is a bit of an exception since there's no way to make glass from imported materials of any kind.

It doesn't require regenning the world, but it does involve globally modifying the raws.  Just be careful doing this.

Dtil comes with a tile editor that can be used to do interesting things.  Like create sand or, supposedly, rivers.  Not something I did terribly often.

I'm fairly certain I've had sand appear in previous fortresses in high traffic areas. I'm pretty sure there was no other sand on the map. This was a long time ago so I could be remembering it wrong, but it might be worth checking just to see if there's anything to it.

If I'm remembering it right, it was grass on top of a soil layer that got turned into sand.

I just modded a reaction that allows me to create raw clear, crystal or green glass if I have the right stuff, using a plant thread as a substitute for sand, means you can have glass wherever you like if you can farm, without having to create sand in any fashion =P

Im actually having my first go at glass industry this map actually, also I recall mods that make rock crystal more common like it ought to be

It's grass on top of and that gets turned into sand. However, sand is indeed a soil layer.

You don't have to make every single soil type have the tag, I just added them to the 'sandy' soils, which in fact, already have a sandy graphic to them. The worst that can happen is that you will get sandy clay deserts and the deserts can vary in color a bit. If you go further than that, the worst you could get is silaceous ooze (a soil type only found in the depths of the ocean) desert or even a peat desert. All the tag does is allow the game to use them as sand.

Just adding them to the 'sandy' soils will increase the chances of having sand in your fortress by alot.

Or pray that you find a decent amount of rock crystal.

Actually I created my own sand tiles after I flooded an underground area for my TC farm. The most high traffic areas eventually turned into sand, but that may also have something to do with sand already existing on my embark in the first place.

Quick thread hijack: What are the specifics for a sandbag stockpile? I've tried every possible combination for a furniture stockpile but my dwarves refuse to put anything in it.

Its not really off topic since we were talking about sand anyways.

As for the sandbag only pile, you can forbid all types, but make sure you have the U setting highlighted and have all material and quality modifiers set to on. I did make that mistake early on when I was having trouble with the sandbag pile, turns out you need either all materials allowed or maybe just the cloth and silk would be fine. Its easier to just allow all material types and remember to turn off the sandbag option for your normal furniture piles.

Edit: You may also want to check your orders menu just in case, that menu trips everybody up once in a while.

If you are looking at making value in just objects, then goblets are the way to go.  You get 3x10 value out of it.  However if you are just looking for total fortress wealth then making and then uilding statues are the way to go.  You get 25 for the object value and then 25 if you uild it under your architectural value.

As for what glass you go with.  If you only want to use sand, then it is green glass for a 2x modifier.  If you got pearlash (from burning ash and then processing it) then you can make clear glass for a 5x modifier.  Crystal Glass doesn't use sand so that is a moot point.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Rock Crystal is damn hard to find and I don't know if you can import useable ones if your home civ or the humans have them.

You can't, since you need raw rock crystal, and you can only import cut gems, not raw.
