Queen arrived... as first Noble?
« on: November 04, 2009, 11:33:26 am »

My Queen has arrived, disguised as a Peasant. She's the first Noble to arrive (the Dungeon Master showed up simultaneously).

I thought several other Nobles would show up first? No Hammerer? No Tax Collectot? No Baron or Baroness?

It was my first immigration wave after reaching 66 Dwarves. Counting the ones that arrived with her, I probably have eighty or so Dwarves now.

I had delayed appointing a Captain of the Guard until the previous season, since I was just digging out my Jail and office suite now... could this delay have cost me the usual Noble immigration?

You got the HFS king (or queen in this case).  They can show up regardless of your population.  Otherwise you need 140 dwarves (required for duchy) to qualify for an Incoming King.

Aha! "The Queen of Clowns"!... I'll give her a Masterwork red nose on an elastic band.

Not to be confused with the Ring Master (unless you are a gobbo)

Speaking of nobles, my baron finally arrived. With him came the next wave of immigrants. As I was recruiting them all into my dwarven masonry force, I noticed that one of them came in ALREADY part of my military with novice axe, wrestling, shield and armor user. Is this normal?

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Yes, you got an immigrant axedwarf.  You can get military just like you can get the other professions.  It depends on what you military skills are, if you have marksdwarves you'll get marksdwarves.  Can also be a combination if you have more than one type of military dwarf.

If your armor was 50% as good as two other civs and 30% as good as a third, do you really think you'd do well in war? That'd be like trying to engage a rocket-launcher mounted Humvee with a pistol riding a tricycle.

Yes, you get military immigrants once you've made one of those weapons at a forge. If memory serves, and the wiki is correct.

The wiki is not correct; I've gotten a macedwarf, swordsdwarf, and speardwarf, and I have never used a forge except to make armor (I buy weapons off traders). Furthermore, I have never had a speardwarf before, having never considered the risk of injury worth the benefits.

I think the military units just arrive randomly by type, based on factors related to how many military units you lose or kill.

Quite possibly true... but I think that the random military immigrants are heavily biased towards weapons already in use in your fortress. I'm currently using only Wrestlers, Axedwarves, Hammerdwarves and Marksdwarves, and ALL of my military immigrants so far have been those professions.

In other news... my HFS Queen has NO likes or dislikes at all. She has personality traits (Quick to Anger, etc), but absolutely no preferences for specific materials, animals, and so on.

Is this normal? Am I likely to get impossible demands for [ITEM] in [ROOM]?

Kings and queens don't make demands. Just give her a royal room with lots of chests and cabinets and she will be happy.

In other news... I just had my first accidental cave-in, while digging out my swimming pool. Three of my four Miners (including both Legendaries) were caught in it, knocked unconcious and blown around like leaves.

Surprisingly, no-one was hurt... not a scratch. Of course, it's possible that the Superdwarvenly Tough Legendaries actually were hurt but recovered instantly.

UPDATE: I didn't know that Queens actually WORKED for a living...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

To make it even funnier... the Dungeon Master was helping her fill the Swimming Pool, when he suddenly snapped (no Tomb, poor Room) and threw a tantrum. Fortunately, instead of punching her out, he ran out into the corridor and broke both the legs of a passing tame Horse.

No charges were laid... not sure why. Can't Nobles get arrested?

Filling Ponds, like dumping items and deconstructing walls, is always active on all dwarves, no matter their status. That's why kids do it too.
