Avatars matter for first impressions, but over time what an avatar means to me becomes associated with the poster's usually voice, rather than the other way around. In general, things like faces have more of an effect while jokes, symbols or otherwise just get detached from the voice, to exclusion of kudos for cool avatars.

In this trend, I've come to despise GDI troopers...

* Mephisto sits back and watches the confusion as the regulars try to figure out who the new poster is.
Not that anyone is likely to know me anyway.

This is my first avatar on this forum. I , over the course of a weekend, finished watching the entire Samurai Champloo series. My favorite character is either Mugen or Jin, but Mugen's avatar picture I found looks better. Therefore, that's the one you see now.

And I missed the whole point of the topic. I recognize people mostly by name. Avatars do help, though.

Also: Holy crap! we have [me] tags!

It fits your name. I'd do the same, but as you can see it sucks.

I am still adverse to the idea of avatar usage as a whole, and like a dog that just refuses to let go of someone's leg I continue to silently protest their usage by neither acquiring one nor turning them on in my user panel.  Whenever I visit this forum on a different machine or am otherwise logged out, I must admit to being somewhat disappointed with the glaring burst of images representing people I would otherwise respect more highly...  But that might just be a side effect of the "standard" light color scheme, which is abominable compared to the Darkling theme.  This point is indisputable, in case anyone was planning on disputing it.

However, I will admit that I don't always keep people entirely straight.  I'm still used to the time when we had maybe a couple dozen active posters, so you could recognize them all by name due to their personality differences.  Now, with so many people posting in relatively similar manners, some of the names have simply started to mean less.  I still remember certain individuals though, some because of their posting style and individuality, others because there's simply been too much hubbub based around them that they're impossible to ignore.

Of course, I also feel that folks should be able to recognize me without needing some sort of visual aid, due to the extensive history of contributions I've made to this board, including...  Ah...  Hmm.

Also Kagus is the only avatarless person I recognize on sight.

Thanks.

Yes, avatars definitely make it easier to see someone when you're scrolling quickly.

I'm surprised this hasn't drifted into a Darkling discussion yet.

All this talk about Avatars had made me change my one to the Avatar.

So long awesome David Tenant Doctor, no doubt you'll be back when I get feed up with his one.

You are my personal hero.

Pun + Awesome game series + Awesome game (this is debated, apparently) + Cheapest stat-building exploit ever = The One True Forum Avatar

Side note:  Aqizzar still has The One Truer Forum Avatar.  :P

The point was not that anything about the image itself affected my opinion of the posts, but that the posts had shaped my thoughts towards seeing the image. At any rate, thanks to you, I can hardly help but to picture all GDI troopers as having dyslexia. :P

Murr. Nails make me distressed, as do tacks and things of that nature.
