I tend to change my avatars every month or so. Can't be helped, I swap my interests fairly often too. And I tend to join fads.

Avatar-induced confusion isn't happening to me that often. Except for when IWM stole my avatar (retribution?), that was confusing.

The spinning Godot period was the most confusing...

And the most annoying.

People who change their avatar frequently I learn to spot their name so someone like Sofia or Errol I'll be subconsciously scanning for their name when I glance at the avatar to see who's posting so if I see a new avatar my immediate thought is "X has a new avatar." its people who rarely change who catch me out and I think oh who's that when I see their avatar.

It only really takes one change and then I'll be confused for a while untill I figure it out and afterword your name will stick in my head.

Also Kagus is the only avatarless person I recognize on sight.

Edit: Still have only used MSpaint. The smoothing was done through editing the luminosity value, not some fancy editor's gradient.

Strife i remember cause he always has a tank.
Aqizzar has always had his. Easy to remember.
Akroma i always remember as having Urabe as her avatar (even though she changed it recently it seems).
Something anime and cute? Then its either Sofia or IWM.
Something flashy, spinning, or random? Its ToonyMan.
Some sort of U with different stuff happening to it? Usually Neruz.
Ive gotten used to Dukes avatar changing, but i still remember him as a duck with a hat.
Mayday's got the demon &.
Fault has the sad goblin.
MrGimp has that paper and pencil sketch of a dwarf.
Footkerchief is always that bobbing head for me, even though he changed it.
I remember qwertyuiopas always had that corridor.
A zangoose? Its Jack_Bread.
I remember zchris having some sort of spikey round yellow robot ball, but now i look for a guy in a suit with shades.

Thats all i remember off the top of my head, but yes, i do look at avatars to see whos posted.

My own avatar is still only the second one ive had, after i finally dug the picture up from somewhere on my old drive. The first one was about a week of Taokoa, for fun.

Eh, im still sorta ignored, even with an avatar. That, and for some reason threads seem to die as soon as i post in them.  :(
