I went to a Beethoven Concert last night
« on: November 01, 2009, 01:12:31 pm »

Last night I went to a concert with music by L.V. Beethoven. I was really excited, this was the first concert I ahd ever been to. It was just amazing, Beethoven is an awesome composer, and the orchestra played his music quite nicely. The pieces that played were: Overture 'Leonore' no. 3, Piano Concerto no. 3, and his 3rd symphony (And two other piano only pieces, I think one was Khachaturian's Sabre Dance). The pianist was awesome, and the orchestra was one of Israel's best (The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra). All in all it was really great.
One thing was really strange though, most of the people were beyond their fifties. This makes me think, is classical music slowly dieing?
Anyway, lets discuss concerts, classical music, and if we are gonna be able to hear Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and many others in about fifty years.

Sweet, Beethoven. The Orchestra near where I live is playing all of Beethoven's symphonies this season. I should go hear one of the less commonly heard ones, like the eighth.

Yeah, most symphony-goers tend to be older folks, which leads us to consider the unfortunate possibility that they are dying out. The young folks these days tend to not have a lot of exposure to good classical music which makes it a constant struggle for orchestras to attract new members. I don't predict it will completely die out, since we still have music schools and government subsidies to many orchestras, but they will struggle. Hell, I haven't been to a concert in a while ... used to be able to get great, cheap seats as part of a student deal, but full price is expensive. I would advise any college or university student here to check if their local orchestra has student discounts, and try it out. It really is much better than listening from a CD. And trust me, the Symphony is a great place for a first date. I'm serious: take someone to the symphony and you'll blow their mind with how cultured you are.

It is not like I would not want to be in a orchestra, it is just that it will require an immense amount of time to become good enough for such a thing, and I have much better things to do, sadly.

I like to listen to all kinds of music.

Just wondering, I've been looking for a song I heard as a kid with very prominent war-drums. It was also a classical composure, would any of you might know which song this could have been?

My grandmother goes to most concerts in our area (There's only one place they play over here, unless you drive to one of the larger cities); she says I'm welcome to come with her whenever I want. Most kids usually enjoy fast paced music like rock and whatnot, which is fine, but some show terrible disrespect to all other forms of music. I really do hope this stuff doesn't die with its supporters.

Angellus, it could be Maurice Ravel's Boléro (Incomplete, highest quality I could find).

I eagerly await the end of November, I'm dieing to go to another concert.

It won't die as long as there are pretentious teenagers who like it to feel superior to their peers.

That sounded very good, I thank you for handing me a great song, but the war drums I mentioned were heavy drums with a very low sound.

Think this, but heavier bass:

I certainly hope not, going to a classical concert (or, even better, an opera) is easily one of my favourite things to do.  Fortunately, I do know enough others my age or not much older who can keep things going for a while, if likely diminished.  I'll certainly do whatever I can to keep it alive, minor as that may be.

All I'm thinking about is that concert, I think I won't think till I see another, I sat in awe throughout the whole thing.

Lets post some bits of music, to start it off, J.S. Bach's Little Fugue, one of my favorite pieces. Tchaikovsky's March of the Toys, taken from The Nutcracker.

For the impressive drumming, this (and some disappeared videos, gah. If you try to find them, they're also from Gayane) and other things from Khachaturian.
This as a piece-you-know-but-forgot-the-name-of: the Dance of the Knights, by Prokofiev.

I seem to be drawn towards composers from Russia-thereabouts.

A couple more to add in:

Overture to "La forza del destino" by Giuseppe Verdi

And for some more Beethoven (you can never have enough!):
Symphony no 6 ("Pastoral"), 1st movement (of course the rest can be found by following the links!)

I think people grow into it when they get older.

I've never really been into much classical music, but when my college's choir and orchestra did Messiah my freshman year, I got hooked on that. I guess Handel is technically baroque though, but whatever. I like his stuff; Judas Maccabaeus is another awesome oratorio.

Messiah is still the bomb though. I tend to sing along to it a lot. Last year I would be in my room, belting out "and he shall purify" and other bombastic parts and then my housemates would be like, "are you singing along to classical music?" I didn't realize  they could hear me. I was kind of embarassed until I remembered that Messiah is the shit.

I really want to go see the Philadelphia Orchestra do it this Christmas and this might be the first year I'll have the money for it.

Not necessarily; I've liked it for years now, and I'm only 22.  I'm not saying that this is never the case, just that it might not always be.

That's why I picked this name originally, actually (not for here, years back, I've used it at several places since).  :)

That's awesome. Little is better than some of the 'ol Ludwig Van to enhance your evening. I always wanted to go to such a concert, but never found the transportation or money when there was one. Gah, one day!
