Fortress Guard
« on: October 31, 2009, 06:10:41 pm »

Wow. my Fortress Guard fails. They and my military are housed in one gigantic barracks, together. My military has seen a seige and a goblin raiding party once a season, so they are all very very skilled at their weapons. However, the Fortress Guard keep starting sparring sessions with the military. Which ends up with the guard being wounded and resting. Constantly.

My whole Guard is currently in "Rest" while my military just sits around sparring.

Do any of you have this issue, I mean, fun coincidence?

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

No, because I don't pay much attention to my Fortress Guard and half of them are legendary axedwarves and refuse to do anything else.

Did you give your fortress guard, you know... armor? That does help with the sparring injuries.

My fortress guard is pretty much unkillable, even though they are all in chain and my military is full plate I am sure that if the two were to go head to head the fortress guard would kick those military fools to hell and back. (They have about the same amount of members)

(Its incredible how fast the fortress and royal guards turn legendary wrestlers and max out all attributes, it takes about 3 seasons. I'll be introducing them to axes soon, although that will mean tons of injuries I'm sure.)

You could do it the Spartan way.  Give them a spear and shield.  Only those that are killed by goblins get a coffin.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

I have thirty dwarves in my fortress guard. The two barracks for them are covered with their clothing. They are all legendary wrestlers (except one, but he's getting there).

Though, I do remember starting on a map with loads of obsidian, so I gave them obsidian short swords, but no armor. So half the guard was always laying in bed, fussing over their nicked leg or whatever.

Dropped them into a pit and let them starve to death when I got bored and decided to destroy the fort.

They all have full leather armor and steel shields and obsidian shortswords. There are 10 of them. My military is a mix with an emphasis on swordsdwarves. Though they arent full legendary (which doesnt make any sense), each military dwarf has at least 7 kills to their name and all wear chain/steel armor and carry steel/obsidian weapons.

If you did it the "Spartan way" they'd also have to be all male and screwing each other as they believed it formed closer bonds between soldiers. They forgot that part in the movie that makes people think Spartans were the ultimate badasses. Also they wore armor and there was another group of soldiers with them whose name escapes me now. Also, if the History Channel is correct then rape against a woman was legal unless she was strong enough to defend herself (although History channel can be very biased about older history, although maybe it's due to the Christian monks who wrote down old Western history, since every single culture I can think of that the Christians conquered or converted just happened to have human sacrifice according to them {until they came to save the day that is}. Example: The Christians used to say in the middle ages that Jews ritually drank children blood. While that has been proven to be false since the Jews still exist, the same sort of things were said about, lets say the Norse. Since they didn't bother to write things down in a conventional sense we have nothing to go on but the writings of the followers of the religion that conquered them and quite possibly wanted a justification for their actions.)

Note that I am not a Viking, Jewish or a homosexual, and am neither defending or attacking anyone, I just says it how I sees it.

I also most certainly am not a combination of the three as amusing as the image that conjures in my mind is.

Wow, so about that fortress guard...

My Fortress Guard is usually the last line of defense, but I always forget to give them armor... or weapons... or any sort of force multiplier. They stand around and look pretty, essentially.

My Guard a re renammed Silver Guard: They carry Silver Shields, Silver Hammer of Dwarven Justice, and as soon as I get enough silver, armor.

The Royal guard is the Golden Guard.

The Royal guard is the Golden Guard.
Armour and weapons can't be made out of gold?
You could make the "Bone Guard" though, which would be fucking badass.

Bad. Ass.

I'm pretty sure you can make armor and weapons out of gold. And silver doesn't do much damage.

In vanilla you can make out weapons out of iron, bronze, silver, copper, bismuth bronze, steel and adamantine. Armour can be made out of all of those except silver.

Then how do you propose making your silver guard? and finishing your gold guard? Really lucky artifacts?
