I decide to continue to Port Kapul anyway, sans escort. I ask the innkeeper to take me to the shelter.
The shelter is a place to spend time during rough weather, such as Hard Rain, but most importantly Etherwind. Traveling on the world map in hard rain randomly blinds you and confuses you, as well as slowing your overland speed by a lot, which is why it is important to seek shelter (unless you're in a REAL hurry, such as in a "Before it's too late" quest. <_<)
Each shelter has a Skill Book and a training machine. This is a book labeled <Art of Mining>, which i read, and get a slight improvement in my mining skill. The main reason i read this though is because supposedly there's a chance of increasing your Learning by doing so.
I decide to take another "Before it's too late", this time with an extra day and to a much closer town.
Another ambush. They don't provide much of a challenge either.
Eventually we arrive in Yowyn, this time BEFORE our escort dies. She thanks us and proceeds with giving us a handsome reward. But all that traveling has made me sleepy, therefor...
A material dream. Materials can be gathered at various places in dungeons and on the world map. They're used in crafting equipment, though i rarely craft stuff, and it's not finished according to the wiki anyway.

Now we get a stroke of good luck! Treasure maps can be found in dreams (among other places), and can be quite lucrative for a beginner.
We also get an increase in our Healing skill, and through it, our constitution! Woo!
I buy some more food and head outside town to read that map.
O marks the spot. We need to find this spot on the world map, travel there, and dig for our treasure. This treasure is buried somewhere north of Palmia, so that's my next destination. Unfortunately, there aren't any fetch/escort quests to Palmia, but what can you do.
This ambush isn't even noteworthy, except that a rat dropped an eye. Monsters sometimes drop corpses and/or body parts, the former can be eaten (you may want to cook it first) or sacrificed to the gods, the other can be sold for a small cash boost.
I take the liberty to read some of the spellbooks i start with as a Warmage. To use magic you first need a spellbook of the spell you want to cast, and preferably read it a long time before you need to actually use it. Casting spells costs an amount of mana and at the same time reduces your "stock" of spells by a random amount. When your stock runs out you need to read the spellbook again to replenish it. Unfortunately, spellbooks only have a certain amount of charges, each reading removes a charge, and eventually you will have to find more spellbooks.
It is not required to have enough mana left to cast a spell, however, casting a spell this way will damage you depending on how much mana you needed to spend beyond what you had left. This is called over-casting, and can kill you.
I arrive in Palmia and proceed with buying new robes to replace my breastplate, which had less DV/PV (bonus to dodge and bonus to defense) as well as weighing tons more. I also buy a pimpin new hat.
I then check the Magic Shop to see if they have any Potions of Cure Mutation to remove that speed penalty we got earlier, but no dice.
Now to dig up that treasu-
...
This ambush wasn't as easy as the others and they make quick work of me.
Luckily, since we're low level we only lose a small amount of gold, dying at level 6 or higher makes dying
much more severe.
We respawn at our home. Now would probably be a good time to introduce some more party members, so i head towards...
Derphy, the thieves den, most famous for lack of guards and large amount of prostitutes, as well as...
The Slave Market. This is the the easiest way to buy humanoid pets.
