Never used it myself, but I believe the bin + burn thing only works for about 3 years, then it burns out.

The other thing to look into might be the "Mist Generator".  It shuffles water around, which makes mist.  But I don't know how high the mist floats up.

Miasma goes up a huge way, and has the benefit of looking vaguely like coal smoke, but you'd need to find a way to replace your rotting things regularly.  But you could build a refuse pile right beneath the smokestack, and put grates up along the inner edges of the smokestack for the miasma.  (Needs to be indoors to generate miasma.)

I'd personally try the mist generator, but I hope the alternate ideas are helpful.

Try this:
Code: [Select]
(side=

 # #
 # #
## ##
#  _D__
#~~~#
#####

# wall
_ platform
~ magma
D door

drop some coal to the magma below the some stack and close the door. The smoke should rise all the way up if the door is closed.

You don't need the bin unless it's going to be exposed to water. If you want to make a bunch of smoke, just put some coal in magma.

Coal, lignite, or graphite would all pump out tons of smoke. You should be able to trade for at least one of those if you don't already have it.

Or just burn a log to charcoal.

Are you trying to make goddamn Pittsburgh?
Anyway, just get a pump and pump it into a tower which will house the magma. How you build the smokestack on top I don't know.

"Difficult" is not "impossible". Build a magma pump stack. I'm sure you'll find other uses for it.

You could set a dwarf on fire at the magma pipe and lead him or her to the smokestack.

Put some lignite in there. Put a fire imp in there. Put a goblin in there. Make sure goblin cannot escape.
Dump some lignite in every few years when it burns out.

I'm pretty sure artifacts (provided they're flamible) smoke indefinitely.  At the least I've observed on do so for a few seasons...

"A few seasons" isn't enough to prove that artifacts don't burn, since lignite will burn that long easily. I wouldn't be surprised if artifacts could be destroyed, though.
