From Wikipedia:
Quote
The plural form Dwarfs has been traced to the 17th century. The alternative plural Dwarves has been recorded in the early 18th century (cf. such plurals as "loaves," "Elves", "halves," etc.) but was not generally accepted until used by philologist J. R. R. Tolkien in his fantasy novel The Hobbit.

Both are valid, but since our society is based on our consumption of culture, it would seem that "Dwarves" is a good plural form... but I personally prefer "Dwarfs", just because it seems demeaning to my little fools in comparison.

I say Dwarves, just because it seems more grammatically correct.

Wharf - Wharves
Scarf - Scarves
Dwarf - Dwarves

I think the real question, is how do we call their society as a whole?

Dwarvish?
Dwarfish?
Dorfish?
Or DWARFY!

Seriously though, I think that's just "Dwarf"... Dwarf Society, ruled (ha) by Dwarf Nobility, noted for it's Dwarf Mugs and, oh yeah, Dwarf Fortress.

Dwarrows!

Really though, I prefer dwarves. It sounds nicer than dwarfs.

When we're talking our little booze-drinking minions freinds in our fortresses, I'm definitely in favor of dwarves, though dwarrows is always a good one for a laugh.

However, if were talking about real-life humans who suffer from dwarfism, then they're dwarfs.

Also, if we're talking about long-dead stars of moderate to small size, then they're red/white dwarfs.

Oh, and the adjective from is definitely dwarven (even if Firefox doesn't like it) so it would be the dwarven civilization.

I'm more interested in the collective noun for a group of dwarves. I vote for binge.

I like it.

I generally prefer "dwarfs" as a plural, since I envision them as more the Snow White kind than the Moria kind.  I also tend to go for elfs in the DF context, for the same reason.  No sense imbuing them with all that Tolkien baggage.

Generally speaking, I've seen "dwarfs" referring to real life people with dwarfism, whereas "dwarves" tends to refer to the fantasy race. Of course, there's some variation both ways, especially since "dwarfs" is considered somewhat derogatory these days.
