Self-impregnating guild representative
« on: October 28, 2009, 11:48:40 pm »

When I feel like being a total dick to the humans I channel away the tile the guild representative is standing over, then build a floor over it leaving them in a 1x1 box to slowly starve and die. My most recent fortress has a female guild rep under my clerks dining table. She gave birth in the first year of being there. I thought fair enough, she has to die soon. A year later another baby pops out.. then the year after another one. There are actually four children down there now, and I'm starting to wonder... where the hell is she getting all these??

That's...more than a little disturbing.

I can provide you with a number of possible answers.

1. Crazed humans are somehow procreating with their year old children.
2. Your dwarves are sneaking under there when you aren't looking for a bit of tail.
3. She's actually a living portal to the plane of endless babies.
4. It's a glitch.

The actual explanation is the standard "reproduction via spores" bit -- when the human caravan visits, she gets pregnant because there's a human male on the map, and females seem to get pregnant pretty much instantly assuming they aren't already and there's an appropriate male around.

It's probably still a bug in this case since humans, like dwarves, should need to be in a relationship before they start spawning. Unless one of the caravan humans is the liaison's husband...

Tentacle Demon. Nuff said.

Real Explanation: There was a human in your map and the spore thing happened.

Maybe she can reproduce asexually? She's no dwarf, but a walking plump helmet. Spores aplenty to make more spawn.

Whoops, didn't read that she was human. Okay then, she's a hermaphrodite.

The only bug here is that she should only be getting pregnant from her husband and that she's still alive after all those years (she should have gone crazy ages ago).

The baby thing is exactly what you'd expect to see thanks to the ubiquitous spores.

The two oddities here are connected. She's staying alive by offering to, ehrm, "liase" with any dwarf who brings her food. Her offspring are half-dwarves. They are abominations. Destroy them with magma, along with the liason and any dwarf who consorted with her.

Could you backup, save and then abandon, to check legends mode?
You might be able to find out there who she is married to.
If that happens to be one of the traders (or maybe caravan guards), like Derakon suggested, then the babies are not a bug.
If not, this is indeed bug-report worthy.

The other part, the Liaison not going insane due to being pregnant might be considered a feature.

"Oh my. Why me. Locked in this dark room now for how long? I cannot stand it any longer!I am SO depressed. I feel like killing myself. End this suffering..Wait..What?What's that feeling..Oh my! Yes me! I'm pregnant! I can feel new life growing in me! I am SO happy!" (ad infinitum)

EDIT: Hehe.. Did you know that you can trap humans in cages, even though they are immune to traps spotted by their liaison? All you need is to either (GCS) web over the cage traps, or create a small cave in on top of a human standing on a cage trap. You could breed human babies, trap them and then ransom them to the human caravan.

UristMcRansomer: "You want proof that your liaison is still alive? I'll bring you proof. Unib! Bring out this year's liaison litter!"
(Unib enters, carrying a cage with 2 crying babies)
"You can take them home in exchange for your caravan's niceties."

Or you could feed them to wild animals / goblins.

Clearly she was pregnant when she came.

And her first kid must have been male...

I actually never knew about the 'spores' thing, that would explain a lot. I had thought she made like an animal and started breeding with her own kids, though the first couple were female.. I'm enjoying the cage idea ;D Currently they're in a 1x2 box with a gem window infront for my Dwarves to enjoy. I'll get a screenshot up once I'm back on my other computer. I think she's a long way to go before she stops popping them out.
