And now he's accused of treason, which carries the death penalty.

Most of you guys are American, so what do you think? Does the United States legally own Taiwan, and is failing in its duty as a military occupier? Or is Taiwan an independent entity, free from American control?

EDIT: Oh, and the Ex-President claimed that he was head of a secret United States military government in Taiwan, and received orders from the United States.

 From what I can see the people of both their parties(That I know of) are not too keen with the idea of being occupied by either China or the USA. It just seems to be this one guy trying his best to wiggle out of trouble. Still, we would need to see what any locals who visit these forums have to say.

I don't know how the Taiwanese people, but I've always been taught that our only territories/occupied areas are the 50 home states and the Phillipines, which don't want to become a state.

Taiwan would make an excellent 51st state. Instead of everything saying "Made in Taiwan" it'd say "Made in America"!

Naw, Taiwan isn't even a protectorate, its just a state the we recognize and that China doesn't.  Our only link with it, really, is that fact that we are the only thing keeping China from reclaiming the island (FYI, Taiwan as a nation was formed by the remnants of the government defeated by the rise of the communist party).

Taiwan only exists as a nation to stoke our national ego and to irritate China, when you get down to it.  So, even if Taiwan started to burn American Flags, all we could do would be to let China in, which our ego won't permit, and if they were to cut themleves off from America... *bampfh*.

So, no.  Not part of the US, just a nation otherwise in limbo between a rock and a hard place.

Also, based on the many Taiwanese i have met in America, they love the US.  I am sure that is due to our massive economic intergration and our military support just in case.

I have read much in that last years though that suggests that China would not take Taiwan, because it is useful for them to have a local capitalist system nearby to funnel certian monies and projects through.

Last I read, it'd still be a royal pain for China to take Tiawan (assuming the USN left), of course destroying it wouldn't be hard.

In my mind, anything that bugs the commies is perfectly good.

The US has a fair number of military bases worldwide, along with several territories. For example, Puerto Rico, and a couple of Pacific Islands. If memory serves, the Philippines voted themselves independent a while ago.

Taiwan isn't even independent. There is only "one China", but two governments: the democratic Republic of China (which owns Taiwan), and the communist People's Republic of China. These two governments both claim control over all of China, including Taiwan. Both governments disagree on what "one China" means, but the PRC prefer this "status quo" over Taiwan actually saying they are independent. So does the US, and since the US does not recognize the Republic of China anymore...well, you figure out the rest.

I think the PRC believes that "reunification" (i.e, annexation of Taiwan) would be more likely accomplished through bribing Taiwan rather than threatening it.
