Touche random name generator, touche
« on: October 28, 2009, 06:16:50 pm »

I started a fortress a while back, and the wagon started right next to a river that split the map in half. The river is filled with carp, sturgeon, and gar. I've lost 8 dwarves and countless animals to these watery beasts. I just found this out now, but the river is called the "Stream of Carnage". The last three game years I've been fighting against the fish via crossbow bolts. So far I've only killed 5 carp and injured quite a few. The river has been red a lot.

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

The RNG sometimes makes very relevent observations.

A sturgeon in a 1x1 pond right next to the river just killed my legendary woodcutter/carpenter and a cook. He also bit off the whole left leg of my only other cook. He almost killed my elite wrestler but I was able to channel 2 squares next to the pond and air drown the fish before any harm could be done, thank you perfectly agile legendary miners. Some of the deaths that have happened are just sad.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

I'm fairly sure the RNG isn't entirely random; it seems to often generate names that are just a little too appropriate.

For example; i've run into 5 different 'Biome of Teeth' (Forest, Mountain, Desert etc) and in every single instance that biome has been full of alligators and crocodiles. And by full, i mean a 6x6 embark and there's 2 - 3 pages of the goddamn things.

Some words are keyed for certain biomes, so it will naturally choose evil adjectives and nouns to describe evil biomes. The teeth thing is probably a coincidence, the word teeth is tied to savagery.

Though I must admit, it can be somewhat prophetic. My fortress of Fountainwet got flooded when a megabeast broke a floodgate holding the water out of my fort.

Na, its because DF is sentient and knows what is going on. That's why it is so CPU intensive.

What if you customized the name of your fort and the local government? I named my fort Furnacecanyon because most of the embark was hot and some was scorching and the brook cuts a small canyon through the mountain and named the local gov The Fire-Hammers of Doom. I wanted to use The Hammers of Fire or The Firey Hammers or something like that but it wouldn't let me. I chose fire because the place is hot, hammers because I want to go for a real military instead of marksdwarves only, and doom... because it sounded cool.

Sometimes the RNG produces wierd civilizations. For example, a dwarf civ in my current world is the Harmonious Fountains. By itself, the name is just odd, but look at their gods, all but ONE is male.

Their gods:
Istrath Crystalwayward, deity: earth, caverns, mountains, wealth, trade

Limul Paledye, deity: jewels

Lebes the Godly Eviscerator, deity: fortresses, war, chaos, thunder (VERY cool name though)

Up to that guy, the pantheon is normal, although there is a lightning god at the end of the list.

Aval the Pure Gladness of Peace, deity: forgiveness

Elcur the Guilty Dourness, deity: torture, misery

Alil, deity: happiness, revelry

Shilrar Primsister the Pregnant Intricacies, deity: song

Gamlat, deity: lust, depravity

Ilul, deity: rulership (this is the only female)

Kizest the Radiant Stance of Goals, deity: lightning

The rest of the civs are pretty normal in terms of the pantheons, but this one pops up as an odd one out for some reason. Maybe the over-emphasis on revelry or something.
