Stainless Steel is very realistic and fun, Lords and Realms is very fun and a bit challenging.

Shit, I might have to try Stainless Steel later. Do they have an equivalent one for Rome? *Looks knowingly at Stworca.*

Well Stainless Steel is fun :D Just played as Scotland and England friggin' Destroyed me (with a capital D). I managed to ally with France and Norway trying to keep them fighting on multiple fronts, and held them off at the Edinburgh border for ages. I even took over the entirety of Ireland.

Then a Crusade got called against Jerusalem.. so I sent my king and a full stack of soldiers on a boat around conquered Jerusalem, slaughtered it's population, destroyed all it's buildings and then secured a trade agreement, an alliance and a lot of money from the Holy Roman Empire by selling it to them (I think they held it for about three turns xD).

Unfortunately the King died during the siege and the countries around Jerusalem attacked the rest of that army and cut them from the boats and escape before wiping them out. His son on the front lines became king and shortly afterwards managed to take York but lost so many troops the English managed to push me back out after a few turns. And they followed. In the battles that came afterwards I lost the entirety of Scotland to them, which after Edinburgh fell wasn't difficult since the other two cities were mostly economical. So I was left with two cities in Ireland and nothing else. I tried to build up my army there for a desperate assault on Wales to get a foothold, but couldn't stabilise the economy with so few cities.

Then England launched the final assault. An invasion fleet landed and laid siege to Dublin. Crap, I sent everything at them trying to pincer them, but got beat back and lost Dublin. With only one city left and my economy completely destroyed, there was nothing I could do. Galway fell pretty quickly, and the English had conquered both Britain and Ireland.

It was fun :D

I think I cranked it up to max for both, which was probably my first mistake xD Only reason I managed to take Jerusalem is because there had been a failed siege right before my army docked which it barely survived ^^ Basically it was 1000 angry scots against 100 of the other guys and they still got a lucky shot in that killed my King >.<

I call it salting the earth, it's my standard tactic when I take a place I know I can't hold or isn't worth the effort of holding. Destroy the buildings, slaughter the people and abandon it to the enemies or the rebels or better yet sell it to an enemy of your enemy :D

yep. I do that too, and if I still have enough army thereafter, I sack other cities along the coasts. disembark, raze, reembark. this gets you very rich very fast at start.

I prefer giving it to the papal states. They swiftly convert it for later invasions XD

been playing rome:total war for the first time in ages as the parthians.

Archer cavalry kind of kill most things when in a half army stack, and badly damage those they dont.

I've been playing Kingdoms as the Brits, and just invaded Scotland, somewhat unprepared with only basic units, when the king foolishly tramped off to invade a rebel castle.  I took their capital with hardly a struggle, and Scotland immediately came back and set siege.  Once he realized my shiny new long bowmen were on the way, he attacked with only a set of ladders and a battering ram.  Despite the rain, the battering ram caught fire, easily preventing 70% of his army to do anything but watch.  My spearmen easily took care of the infantry as they climbed the ladders, and the attackers finally began running away.  I thought the battle was over.

Until the AI broke and decided to get his ladders back with his exhausted archers (I spent an entire turn making those!), and let 90% of his remaining infantry die under a hail of arrows while escorting the poor buggers.  One Scottish archer in particular spat in death's face in an epic standoff with my towers and archers, somehow surviving the entire thing, while constantly shouting as the AI told him to fire over and over again in rapid succession.  I giggled, watching time tick by until the clock finally ran out.

I felt so bad for the troops that I released them when I captured them.  The Scottish King walked backwards all the way to his new castle for some reason.  I would have, too.

Which mod is it where you can take over the world as Scotland?  It's obviously not under Kingdoms.

You don't need a mod. You unlock factions for play by defeating them. Take out the second scottish castle and you can start a new game as them.

Ok, I skipped the 39 or so pages, I only have Rome TW with the Barbarian expansion, it's great, but I am just not a good leader and commander.  I can't even subdue the bloody Gauls on normal mode ( for both battle and campaign ).  I hope that this doesn't mean I'm a terrible general, it's just that whenever I do a battle, conquer a city, whatever, I just lose this will to play.  This happens much faster when I LOSE a battle, which doesn't actually happen that often, or so I believe, but when it does, my morale is completely crushed.  I don't care if the battle was completely inconsequential, I just have no will to fight, so I end up exiting to my desktop.

I just feel like such an amateur ( especially after watching Stworca's LPs ) and my negativity ruins the game for me.

Also, among the Total War games, what do you recommend?  Medieval sounds nice, the tactics seem similar to RTW, Empire and Napoleon look awesome, but the guns are kinda new, etc.  Help.
