I like playing as Scotland myself, bumrushing england as fast as possible before setting up a more normal power structure. Though when I'm in the mood for silly fun I play as Hungry or an Islamic faction and spam assassins until I can make their battlefield assassin units.

What is this battlefield assassin unit anyway?

Also; Hungary just has some badass units and a good starting position, the quality of their units goes down in the late game IIRC.

It's a half decent unit that have hide on any battle map as long as they stand still, similer to the Arcani from R:TW, but not as good.

One of the Assassin's Guild buildings, I forget which one, that's why I spam assassins to get them.

Probably the headquarters... Or would it just me a major guildhouse?

I thought they were brilliant until I actually used them. The unit size is far to small for them to be effective. Its a shame really.

It might just be the minor guildhouse, you just need to have used assassins enough, besides these units are unique to hungry, the islamic factions have a slightly different version that they share.

assasins are mainly used for nukeing a unit from behind to cause a moral cascade.

ie: hungarian infantry is heavly engaged. assasin bumrush to the back = break moral.

and i suppose 2 or 3 of the units in cohesion could assasinate a general.

I was under the impression that assassins were used to sneak up on the enemy general in the battlefield and wipe him out.

generaly, the general can juts run away and then the assasin squad gets ganked by several units and collapses.

its better to use them as a moral breaker than general assasination unless your in an ambush battle. in wich case you can just dive in and cut the general to peices anyways and then strike the rest of the army.

I've heard Stainless Steel is good.
I'm using the LotR mod, and the WHFB mod when it isn't broken.

Disclaimer: all the following is merely my opinion.

Best overall is TATW, the LoTR mod.  Massive unit variety and some cool new mechanics to play with.
Best AI is DarthMod.  It rebalances things rather than changing them outright and makes the battle AI in particular a LOT more fun to play against.
Most realistic is Stainless Steel.
