Exactly, if you play, as an Italian especially, try to get an alliance wiht the Papal States ASAP. Then do what he says and you can usually bring down crusades on guys that attack you.

GAH, double post, necro what ever, it's better than making a new thread for this.

Anyway, what's the best way to fight the mongols? I'm thinking nothing but archers and heavy cavalry (I'm England, so my archers rock.)

Get them to assault your castles, I guess. Or fight them at bridges. Out in the open, you don't stand a chance.

Hellhound is correct, their infantry is horrible, simply horrible, use tight spaces and good spearmen + Archers to rip them apart.

...and kill any leader they may have. their bonuses stockpiles fast.

you want them at they lowest morale, so archer can mow down routing units.

I had to stack up units at castles to defeat the mongols. Christ, they were nothing compared to the timurids though

Timurids have Elephant Artillary, they can smash walls in an instand, and formations, very dangerous. In truth I prefer just to stack damn good units and auto-battle the Timurids.

Am I the only one who's never learned to use horse archers properly? They never seem very effective to me. Not that I've used them much out of crusades, but still.

Might be because I always just go for a quick, morale-breaking kill by attacking with heavy cavalry from the rear and sides, and they have no role in that kind of tactic.

I never learned to use them properly. Hell it took me forever to use normal archers properly. I tend to use heavy infantry/spearmen heavy armies with some heavy cav for hit and runs.

I'm jumping into this thread to say only this.

I once had a full unit of spearmen advancing on a half demoralized and tired unit of archers who were being flanked by my calvalry at the same time.  Reveling in my tactical genious I waited a moment only to realize that both my cavalry and spearmen were being annilated and routed by the single half assed unit of archers.

I uninstalled the game and havent played since.  I was am that mad.

I'm going to assume you where playing on Very Hard, where the AI gets stupid bonuses to their stats rather than acting more intelligently.
This is why I play on M/M, the harder modes don't make the AI more intelligent, they just give it stupid bonuses.

I have no idea what happened there, more info? Were they samurai archers? Because they're less effective than Katana Samurai but are still a serious threat to Ashigaru.

The cavalry I can't account for, but if you were playing on Very Hard, yeah, dumbass bonuses, like that one in Empire where the enemy would remain on 'wavering' indefinitely no matter the odds if you engaged them inside the fort.

LOOK AT ME BEING DUMB.

Two threads about the same series leaves me gaping like an idiot.

Jackrabbit, I'm reasonibly sure that thing in empire isn't due to bonuses. If enemy units in a seige, or your own while defending, are in the city/fort square they never rout.

Not entirely true for Empire. I've routed units defended the circle in the middle before, but it's extremely hit and miss (enough so that I've succeeded less than 30% of the time) and I can't tell if them routing is a bug or them not routing unless I'm ridiculously lucky is a bug.
