Don't you people know? You can't choose an avatar; it must come to you. You must be in seclusion, mind open and clear, ready to collect inspiration. Seek this not as a hunter, but as a gatherer, and the ideas, the raw avatars, will flock to you.
Find from these the one that is your soul; the one that will speak for you, and that others will know you by. This may indeed be a penguin, or it may be a terminator, or it may spin, but it should not simply be a part of a fad.

It is true that there are guidelines, but they are simple, and the main one is this:
The avatar should ideally be able to speak in some sense; perhaps it is a portrait, perhaps it has some other manner, such as printing text. In this way, others will associate this avatar with you, possibly more quickly than they might associate a cloud or an abstract shape or a string of numbers.

When you have completed your spirit quest, and find your Avatar, then you will have a steed for life. Go with great wisdom.
