Interesting Dwarf Names
« on: October 24, 2009, 07:33:43 pm »

(Other than Urist McUrist)

I didnt know I had this dwarf wandering my fortress until a fey mood struck him. He's a engraver/mason. His name is Bomrek "Whippedlances" Bomrekkivish. You can call him "Whipped Whippedlances", for short  ;D

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

He's distantly related to Yan Yansen from Baldur's Gate 2.

Apparently so. I wouldnt doubt it. I also have a Rimtar Rimtar*something* (I forgot the second half of his name) which means "Castle Castle*something*"

For some reason, all the double named people seem to be in my military...

"Zaneg Racklocks the Speechless Wrath" - A guard who leveled up in wrestling very quickly and didn't have time to make friends. He was wounded in sparring, brain damage and punctured lung.

Due to his brain damage he cannot make friends and has only a mule to confine in. He has 3 passing acquaintances, all whom died in the great tantrum spiral of '198... in which he had to perform his duties and beat five of his fellow dwarves to death.

I like to think that he is slightly retarded, constantly in pain, shunned by his fellow dwarves for what he did ... and a mute. "The speechless wrath" indeed.

My Tax Collector's name translates as "Axe Knife-Morals".

That's an awesome name for a Taxman.

This is my most epicly extreme of my champion dwarves. I made a thread about her a few months ago. Her nickname was Thor, her title is the interesting part: "Thor Anvil Pleaded the Tender Virginity".

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

i would guess that it's a patronymic construction where '-kivish' means '-son' in dwarvish. similar to english 'johnson' or russian 'ivanovich' from which names like john johnson or ivan ivanovich are derived. of course 'McUrist' is also a patronym

"Iden Axedragon, King"

His translated name still had the word Iden in it. I don't know why it didn't translate.

He's also a Great Pump-Operator and Competent Speardwarf.

Given names never translate.
It's easy enough to translate them by finding another Dwarf with the SAME name as part of his last name, though.

One of my Wrestlers in my current fort has the last name "HallDeath". He would make a good corridor monitor.

^Right, but the game itself doesn't translate them, which is what I was referring to. Answering the question above me, that is.

I haven't seen an Urist in ages.

Edit: Just checked my 90 strong fortress, not a single Urist. When I started this game in late 2007 I recall Urist being quite common.

Same here. In my current world, out of 34,172 historical figures, there were 10 Urists. One of them was a revenge goddess, though.

An appropriate name, considering it means "dagger". (I once named an adventurer Urist Daggerdagger. Great times.)
