damn nobles and random product mandates
« on: October 23, 2009, 01:29:28 pm »

so i had to make 9 crowns, after starting lots and lots of crafting i had 8 crowns and like 80 from the other stuff (scepters, amuletts and so on)
and the noble was not amused, the hammerer was send out to punish my legendary armorcrafter with grandmaster metalsmith.

thats just freaking annoying i have no control to make exact 9 crowns because i need nearly 100 orders to fullfill because of the other crap i get from it...

was the third urist mclegendary i lost because of that (one to scepters and one to drums). could be more, but at least sometimes they just rot in prison for half a year

please back off from comments like "kill nobles". i like the challenge in general and play lawful, but as long i have control over it.

You could just kill the hammerer instead.

Or see to it that he's so severely injured he can't get out of bed.

Honestly even if you were going lawful I'd keep killing off nobles until you find one who likes green glass and windows or something. Certainly if you get a noble who likes any kind of gem, or glass on a no-sand map, or steel on a no-flux map, you're just going to be spending your time managing disasters in a fort that has a covering of tears, vomit, and blood.

Mod it so that there are fewer toys thus upping the chance of getting what is mandated.

Doesn't that require a regen though?

This is why I almost always play low-pop forts.

Best solution I can think of is to kill off all non-unique (king/queen/etc) nobles in your fort, and kill any new ones that try and immigrate in.

there is no way i would kill a dwarf beside a mayor (as the post is reserved for "my" dwarf :p) also modding makes the stuff less fun, its just annoying
i also never embark without one tile of sand, flux and steel can be imported anyway (thats the challenge here)

i was just bitching for the mandate i CAN fullfill, but the random number god hates me

Lately I've been playing completely without law, by never hiring any guards or appointing a sherrif.  Apparently if you never start the process, the Hammerer never does his thing either.  I end up with my nobles having bad thoughts about sentences not being carried out, but at least I have no unwarranted beatings.

This is an exploit of sorts, but in a system which can cough up "item in room", which is completely un-fillable, I think it is kosher to use one feature in defense against the other.

dump the hammerers hammer? Doesn't the hammerer only get involved when lesser justice fails? (at least most of the time?)

metal crafts.. now that is a cruel, cruel thing. you could adjust the raws so that they produce more on melt, and melt them all (I assume you are limited by metal supply, as in the timeframe of a demand, a legendary crafter could make far more than 100 items), replenishing supplies a bit.

Actually, in serious cases the justice system skips beatings and goes right to Hammerstrikes. Murder gets you 50 kisses of the gavel of justice, and I believe eventually failed mandates get you up there.

Well, rather than using a flaw to make the hammerer not hammer, thus worthless, why not just give him a hammer made out of plushy kitten toys?

They he can beat on dorfs all day and never do any harm, but nobles are happy that the SPIRIT of the demand was carried out.

hmm, what if I make someone captian of the guard temporarily and then remove them from that spot, would the hammerer still do his/her work? Or does the hammerer require a captain of the guard? or once you start the dwarven justice system of punishment, there is no stopping it? I don't mean stopping dwarves from getting tagged for punishment, I mean from bieng carried out.

Actually, it was my impression that the Hammerer forced the beginning of justice. I hope I'm wrong, because then I don't need to play around nobles anymore.
