So my dwarf Katie had another baby...
« on: October 23, 2009, 12:19:40 pm »

...while lying in bed unconscious with a broken leg and a mangled left arm and hand. ;o_O

*"Katie" Zantangek cancels Die: Seeking Infant* (not an actual message, sadly)

...is that possible, or did she like get beat up right directly afterwards? (My fortress is currently in a spiral of doom)

In Dwarf Fortress, everything you can possibly think of which is horrible and sickening, is within possibility for your dwarves.

So yes. A baby can pop out at any time, even if it's a second before the mother dies.

Which will result in the baby throwing itself off the tallest object around until it dies or until it grows up.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

Heh. Wow. Dwarves can stand obscene amounts of pain. They're totally badass, but then we already knew that. ;D

Dwarves don't actually experience pain during childbirth - they can even give birth while asleep and it won't wake them up.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Nope. A baby without a mother will just crawl around, being fed and watered by dwarves. I have a child in my fort whose mother got magmaed when she was a baby, and she survived until childhood.
Although she was very sober.

I'm sure you don't mean that literally.

If anything, Baby Libash probably had two [ALCOHOL_DEPENDENT] tags.

I've seen soldiers have a baby during combat, pick it up, and keep fighting.

As for delivery while asleep, I always just assumed mommy was really tired and drunk off her ass.

Hmm. The mysterious suicidal babies do sometimes survive into adulthood. But I've had cases where they off themselves as soon as possible.

I wonder what triggers that. Should experiment with migrants.

Perhaps they're going Melancholy when their mother dies, but no message appears?

i had one baby live its childhood in 4/7 water before. Funnel shaped reservoir to later flood the underworld once I dug it out and an access tunnel to other reservoirs  conected to it. Mom drops her baby after a dangerous terain message and the little guy crawls half way down the flooded access tunnel. no one can reach him. (cancel spam was horrible) and baby wouldn't drown!

I had a champion give birth while asleep in her bed with her three other children.  None of them even noticed the baby sneak out the door and down the hall.  Of course, the mother went straight after the kid when she did wake up, and by then it was halfway to the booze pile :D

They wander around aimlessly.  It's pretty much a random chance based on how baby-safe your fort is.

Meloncholy sentients, on the other hand, do actively seek suicide.  I once had two meloncholy elves and a meloncholy cow stuck on a loop of climbing 1-z, and then jumping down (it was the highest thing nearby).

Should have built it higher :D

My last orphan baby died of thirst in the middle of my very crowed statue garden even though it's father and siblings were all still alive. Still, being on baby down isn't so bad when I've got 70 more children cluttering up my corridors D:

So yes. A baby can pop out at any time, even if it's a second before the mother dies.

This has been pretty normal for most of human history, unfortunately.
