I remember when our old desktop was having problems. It was laggy, slow, not running internet correctly, and downloading viruses and opening porn. Anyway, My brother had a facepalm sesh- at my mother, and told her that Norton was a useless piece of shit, and to install AVG. Course, we had to do the USB thing, cos we didn't trust the internet.

Anyway, total number of viruses, Spyware's, and keyloggers found with a search on raw AVG = 146,
Then we updated it, and searched again. Another 73.

I had Norton (it came with the PC)

I don't have problems with viruses, so I didn't update it. Each day it would lock up a key and make it not respond, such as semicolon. After this became crippling, I registered it to see what would happen, and before scanning it got better. So I tried to delete Norton.

It reinstalled the next day, so I just formatted my hard drive (after backing up my shit.)

I was more than a little peeved when I found out that my new computer came with a Norton trial. Of course, I thought I could just delete it and be done with things once the trial ran out. What fun that was. After I'd uninstalled it, all the data coming in over the internet started getting corrupted. Pictures would be missing bits or have weird colour issues, and no downloads (especially the avast download) would work. I'm not particularly computer literate, but the people I went to were even less so, so in the end I had to reformat. I zapped Norton good the next time round though, and luckily it didn't play up.

Were you using... internet explorer, for some reason?

Most of my virus problems came from not using an anti-virus for a while. In any case, when anything seems suspicious, I can migrate files to my other partition, dust off, and nuke Vista from orbit.

I remember when I first found the internet...I would screw it up so bad in about a week my dad had to format the computer  , this happened so many times he would go crazy every week  .

Hmm off the top of my head I don't recall any bad virus stuff. I've norton right now and it doesn't seem to be doing anything bad, works rather well for me actually. Could be that I use firefox which doesn't have as many holes as explorer but meh. Can someone post the link to the AVG they were talking about? A search pulls up more than one "AVG" antivirus program. I might try it to see if it catches anything norton doesn't.

Use firefox and addblock plus and you'll never get a virus from browsing a site again. I use avg too but have never gotten a warning since I installed addblock plus.

Back when Magic Trainer Creator was still being used to cheat in games, I had an odd little trojan thing that kept doing awful things to my registry and somehow kept being overlooked by the antivirus I had at the time (the AV was crap, but that's not the point). I knew what was the offending file, but back then there was no way for me to delete an actively running program, and it kept doing its stuff no matter what I tried. Then I remembered a side-effect of MTC, where locking on a few memory values at once and setting them to freeze at a very high refresh rate would crash the target process. So I fired up the cheat program, found the running virus process, took a pageful of memory addresses and set them all to freeze. Sure enough, the intruder quite rapidly imploded, and I was able to delete its files. The trojan was never heard from again. I felt real proud for doing that (though I could probably just use safe mode >_>).

My friend prevented a virus from fucking his shit up by deleting the .exe attachment so his computer didn't know what .exe's were anymore.

Of course he soon ran into other issues...
