What does increasing DF's priority in the .init file do?
« on: October 23, 2009, 03:17:16 am »

Mine's set at normal. Will increasing this give me an FPS increase?

It depends on how much junk you have running along fortress, and in that case you are better off just with closing those apps.

I wouldn't set it higher than ABOVE_NORMAL. I tried that once and it actually started having higher priority than my keyboard input, for crying out loud.

Fool around with it if you want, and just see the results for yourself. That's your best bet.

IDLE / BELOW_NORMAL: You don't want these since DF certainly won't run faster with below-normal priority.
NORMAL: What it says on the can, just stick with this if the others are problematic.
ABOVE_NORMAL: Might help, slightly.
HIGH: Might interfere with stuff like input if you aren't lucky.
REALTIME: Probably a very bad idea since DF won't let up on the CPU for damn near anything.

Use realtime only if you are on a dual-core comp or quad (like me :P)

Set DF to ONE CORE ONLY.

You'll get a MASSIVE boost!

And, if anybody's wondering, on Mac and Linux it's completely ignored.

Oh really? Eh I'm on a Macboo Pro. So much for that. One thing I don't like about the Mac version is that the FPS counter is always 0. I'd like to have a working one.

That's been fixed for ages. Download 40d16 or something.

Ninja question!
Anyone know how to massively assign processes to one or another core? Windows' task manager can only do one at a time, and it's quite time consuming.

I use SMP Seesaw (note, in the page, might have to right click and hit 'save target as' to download, sometimes it tries to decode the file in HTML for some reason)
