Ugh, humans.
« on: October 23, 2009, 02:21:33 am »

Just got a human caravan, remembered that elves sometimes sold stuff in cages without telling you what said cage contains, I checked the cages.

Oh, boy, Dog corpse.  Horse corpse.

I didn't even realize they could give you corpses, and is it even possible to put a dead animal in a cage?

Hmm, wonder if the corpses are butcherable.  Then again, you probably can't unassign the corpse from the cage.

Only in dwarven culture is alcohol poisoning a death worthed investigating, while being impaled through several toes, a eye, and a thumb from a spiraling water[3] is not.  Because everyone knows, the only way a dwarf could get alcohol poisoning is if someone put poison into the alcohol.

You're in a cold biome, I take it. If it's cold enough the animals die en route to your fortress.

The positive side is that the corpses are indeed butcherable, and you don't need to do anything fancy to have it done - the dwarves will haul the cage to the butcher shop, butcher the corpse inside, and then the empty cage will be hauled off to a stockpile. And corpses have 0 cost so you can buy them for the cost of the cage they're in.

On the negative side, the only live animals you'll be able to import will be the pets of immigrants. Plus, the game counts the value of the live animals as part of the total value the caravan brought into the fort, so if you don't buy the corpses they'll count that as a loss and it'll negatively affect future caravan values.

Human traders are the best source of dead wildlife meat. I had one human civ. that literally had access to trade EVERY KNOWN BUTCHERABLE ANIMAL in DF.

Giant Eagle steaks anyone?
