« on: October 22, 2009, 05:53:21 pm »

ok so i got a new fort and im building next to a magma pipe. my plan is to make a obsidian farm. i know how to do that but what i need to know what to do is if i should make the lava come to my base for my magma forge. or put my magma forge next to the lava? there are only 4 fire imps so it wont be hard to get rid of them. so what should i do? make the magma come to me or go to the magma? ???

that depends on how far away you're trying to bring the magma. magma flows very slowly over long distances without pumps. also if you want to build a glass industry, you need to build your magma district near sand

Up to you, really. I generally dig a tunnel instead of putting my forges on the caldera, mostly because while imps arewimps, an unlucky roll could ruin one of your starting 7 (I generally get the forges up and running before any migrants arrive), whereas magma access tunnels are basically completely safe. But if you have the wherewithal to kill the imps off, by all means, build on the caldera.

"Only four fire imps.  Should be easy." Famous last words.

To answer your question, magma moves slow, so if you're wanting to build something away from the magma, you'll need pumps unless you have lots of time to waste.  Just pick whatever works for you.  Either way, magma typically leads to fun, so you'll probably not want to get used to the group of dwarves you've got with you.

I once lost a fort to the corpses of three imps.

Stupid burny-meated imps.

How to deal with Magma creatures:

The Dwarfy way:

Step 1: wall off the fire spawned demons of magma

step 2: build floors over magma source.

Step 3a: collapse
Step 3b: repeat step 2 and 3a until satisfactory results occur.

Step 4: cook out (elf tallow roasts anyone?)

Step 5: ????

Step 6: profit, but don't say candlejack or else he wi----

Easy way to deal with magma creatures is to bring the magma through a fortification where you get it from the magme pipe

if your magma pipe is wider than 1 tiles you need to keep your dwarves very far from it, lest they burn alive. Place/dump all stone in the magma pipe tunnel before you let in the magma, this way you'll rid of much stone. But don't do anything from mason's workshop when you launch magma if you haven't erased the stockpiles from the magma corridor because oother wise you might kill some dwarves.

Actually, it's better not to have stone in the magma tunnel before magma flows into it, because a glitch will cause them to fail to melt if the flow pushes them around, so that the stone becomes invisible but continues to create lag. Dump the stone in after the magma settles.

It's been suggested that fortifications may do nothing for swimming creatures, with evidence that fire imps crawl right through them.  Pumps, however, will stop creatures.

I have definitely had fire imps go through a single fortification into my magma furnace area.

Since then, I've always used more than one fortification (in a row); I've yet to have a problem so far.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

its not swimming, afaik, its being pushed by flows. Once everything stops moving you shouldn't have a problem.

Technically both wrong, candlejack abducts people at the end of the sentance where they speak his name, as this doesn't look right on the internets, it's usually adjusted into abducting them in the middle of a wor
