1.  I said magma.  I've watched 1/7 magma happily dance around forever on top of 7/7 magma.

2.  That doesn't mean anything.  The 1/7 water could have been pushed to the floors to the sides and evaporated.

Sounds like a mantra.

What your screenshot shows is that the 1/7 water moved onto land and dried there. On the ground 1/7 water is stationary but on top of water it slides around the way other units of water slide aroundon 1/7 or more water.
If you dig a pit with walls all around it and fill it up to 1/7 on the second level none of that will evaporate.

I'm quite certain, that water 8/7 DOES evaporate to 7/7!

Only one way to tell! I've dug a two level 1x1 pit and designated a pond above, once the second level reaches 1/7 I'll remove the pond zone. It's now winter, so if there still is some water by winter next year the question will be answered once and for all!

Several people misunderstand what we're talking about.

Magma evaporates the same as water, we all know this.
We're talking about two levels of magma, with the top one being 1/7 and the lower obviously being 7/7. The top layer will not evaporate, it's only 1/7 on top of ground that does that. We are talking about an 8/7 column of whichever fluid.

I've done glacial forts with large cisterns and rerouted underground rivers and all manner of things (well, I haven't made a freeze-trap in an actual fort but I've helped design one.)The water knows what's on the level below it.

But ya, if people need to test it themselves make yourself a little pond full 7/7 and then dump a single bucket on it so you've got a 1/7 zipping around on the second layer. It will do so for the rest of your fort if it's undisturbed.

What Shoku said.  People often mistake this stuff because they leave even 1 tile of floor around where evaporation can take place.  You need walls around everywhere that the 7/7 water or magma is and then 1/7 fluid can dance around on top forever.

And keep in mind, this doesn't count hot biomes where all water will evaporate regardless of level.

Actually, I think 8/7 fluids do evaporate if they stay still. I have no evidence to back me up, unfortunately, but I believe the break down is that if a tile remains at 1/7 for x amount of time, it evaporates. However, with the 1/7 zipping about over a large area, it doesn't actually stay still, does it? So it has no time to evaporate. But a 1x1 well shaft... Yes, I think evaporation of 8/7 to 7/7 does occur.

It has been tested.  1/7 magma on 7/7 magma does evaporate.

I can personally confirm this.  I filled a uniform, covered, multi-level reservoir with magma and stopped the inflow when one level was a mix of 2/7 and 1/7 all on top of 7/7.  After about half a year to a year, there was only 1/7 and 0/7 (no magma) on top of 7/7, and it was still disappearing.  On the same map, 7/7 magma will not itself evaporate.  I recorded a few movies of this just for reviewing sake.  I mostly wanted to see what happens inside the magma pipe itself, but it's just too chaotic in there (shelves and spontaneous 7/7 tiles), so I settled with my dwarf-made reservoir.

Water may or may not behave the same, but so many fluid rules are shared that it shouldn't be immediately dismissed.

I will try to do a test with water, got most of it set up already.
