Well thats that, I've walled myself in...
« on: October 21, 2009, 03:55:13 pm »

After three massive goblin sieges in the passed two years, Ive made a fateful choice.. .In that time the only migrants who still come are nobles, who I kill off again and again.. no new migrants means no one to replenish my numbers, while the Gobline sieges happen over and over...

I once hoped the Dwearf would "repopulate" themselves, but after 6years worth of Fortress, no one seesm to have had ANY kids.

its rather annoying as this is all happening on My "Dwarf Heaven" fortress.  What is supposed to be a shinning capital of Uber Dwarfdom may slowly be ground dwon into nothingness one dwarf at a Time...

So Im Walling myself in... I built a Trade Depot outside just so they don't bypass me.  I've also built an "airlock" system so when the time comes I can rush out, trade, and then rush back in again with as few dwarfs a possible.. Either way its a bit disheartening the situation I am in.

Anyone else mate a similar fate?

For sure.
Don't forget to farm tower caps for wood.
I suggest making you're airlock very long, then lining the entire thing with upright spikes connected to a lever. That way you can allow Gobbos/nobles/elves/communists into the airlock then stab them from the crotch up.

To encourage your dwarves to get married and do the beard-spore thing,
Make a very small (2x1, with 1 tile filled by a statue to designate a room from) statue garden,
and make sure that that is the only meeting area of the fort. So, do not assign your dining room(s) as meeting halls. Just keep them as dining rooms, that way your dwarves will still get the happy thoughts for it. Also, do not designate zoos (rooms from cages/chains), or meeting areas via the (i) menu.

When you do this, all parties, and most off duty time of your dwarves will be spent making a big heap-of-dwarves in the 1 tile of your meeting garden. Somehow, dwarves regard being stuffed into another dwarf's armpit, while chewing on someone's beard, as a great sign of affection, and great friendships and passionate relationships (as far as dwaves can be passionate about anything not made out of hard materials) tend to grow from this.

In my current fort, I had only 6 migrants, and then no more at all (in 16 in game years).
I applied this method, and in year 15, I was happy to see my 3d couple get married so far (which means, of my 13 adult dwarves, 6 are married, which is not a bad score at all, if I dare say so myself).

Just hold out long enough to get nobles. They do nothing but squirt out babies.

You're aware that your constantly killing off nobles is what is causing the lack of immigration, yes?

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

It's smarter to build a Depot INSIDE an airlock, so they can go there, you close the airlock, trade at ease, and then release them again. ^^

Make a very, very tiny meeting zone. Like, a 1x1 meeting zone.

Have very little work going on so your fortress is mostly idle. Maybe a plump helmet farm, and thats it. Your dwarves can drink from the well.

They will spend all of their time socializing, and pretty soon all unmarried dwarves will hook up, and begin popping out babies.

Erm, they'll also noble, and fill ponds, and trade in the depot if you set it to "anyone can trade" *g*

No, the children of nobles are not nobles themselves.

I once had a countess who produced almost a dozen useful haulers!  :o

Dwarven Democracy. Officials are elected to nobleman rank...somewhere far, far away from your fortress.
