Slavery is against the priciples of anarchy, where everyone is equal. You should read on wikipedia about anarchist societies in history. Really interesting read.

@TheNewerMartianEmperor: Ever heard of Monkey Sphere theory? It says that there is a capacity of people that you care about. In case of humans it's ~150. You can clearly see that there are billions of humans in the world and we don't care about strangers. With who people surround themselves mostly? With family. And families aren't that big to create total chaos.

Also you say that people are paranoid? I partially disagree. While irrational behaviour is common in todays societes it slowly fades away and dies. Tolerance is growing larger. I would have been burned on stake many years ago, but now I'm met with tolerance from people surrounding me.

i see that many of you stand on the fact that humans are evil intolerant and paranoid on the inside, but I disagree. I believe that some form of not getting each other in the way would form if an anarchical society would exist. In fact one already exists. In holland, but the government wants it destroyed.

But the point of anarchy is that there is no law besides personal law and that anyone can do anything. That includes slavery. There are real bastards out there, you think they're gonna care about humanity being equal?

One day, we shall all look back on this, and laugh. Sorry about the face, by the way, and the legs, and the eyes, and the arms. In fact, sorry 'bout the whole body.

We would first have to assume that others will simply let them be.
We're not DF goblins.

If such groups would form, then it wouldn't be much different than what is happening now on some parts of this planet. If we assume that there are complete assholes we have to assume there are good-dooers, and that good people will stand up to oppose abuse. Anarchistic societies have formed on this planet a couple of times and survived from only a couple of decades to three centuries.
The crime rate was surprisingly low in those societies.

I should also mention that there are crime groups now that deal with slavery. This things happen regardles of form of government, so making it exclusively anarchistic isn't quite true.

EDIT: I find derails incredibly stupid. If anyone wants to continue this discussion I better create a new thread for it and we can drop this talk here on the spot.

Yeah.  Remember, anarchy is the basic state - the natural one.  The laws we have today weren't around when we first developed into a notable species.

The problem with anarchy is that for it to work you'd have to find a way to satisfy infinite wants with finite resources. Conflict over resources is an inescapable lack of life. And when conflict comes to bloodshed, people form into groups with fairly strict chains of command. Those that form more loosely organized groups get steamrolled by the other groups because they have inferior decision-making mechanisms (inferior from effectiveness point of view, not morality one).

I too enjoy being lynched for not sharing my limited resources with people I don't know.

What natural state? Find me a herd animal that doesn't have an alpha leader in each herd. Go on, try.

Anarchy is not a viable long-term government, at least not for humans.

If we manage to become a Hive Society, then you might be able to get something similar to Anarchy working.

What I love about anarchists is how the majority of them would last around eight seconds in a world with no laws.

The concept of a Hive Society is basically what you see in insect hives in fiction; Every individual is able to contact every other individual instantly (ideally via some sort of mental link). We're already starting to see initial signs of progression to a hive society with the internet and mobile phones, twitter, IM services and soforth. I wouldn't be surprised to find that a large amount (possibly even a majority) of the human race in the future is a Hive Society. It certainly seems to be the direction we're heading at the moment.

The advantage of course is that with a Hive Society you do not need leaders; as the entire population can be contacted and consulted at any time, the entire society can make decisions as a group (no clue how to set up a political system like that mind you, since it has never happened). So you end up with a sort of Democracy\Anarchy hybrid. Technically it's actually 'perfect Democracy' (since that's what Democracy is supposed to be; everyone has a say in everything) but there's alot of semantics in politics.

Honestly the idea of everyone getting a say in how the government is run is scarier to me than the idea of no government at all.  The latter I could fill the back of a truck with non-perishable food and hide in a basement until everything blows over and then suck up to whoever's taken control.

Considering a Hive Society has never existed to our knowledge, we have no idea if it would work or not.
