Some people aren't so sweet on the icing policy that was in place at Wal-Mart after the bakery at a Lower Nazareth Township, Pa. store put the name Adolf Hitler on a birthday cake. Adolf Hitler Campbell's parents went to the Lower Nazareth store hoping to get a specialized name cake for their three-year-old's birthday after being turned away at another area store. The plight of little Adolf Hitler's parents trying to get their son a cake has made worldwide headlines and caused controversy.

Wal-Mart told NBC 10's Stacey Weaver that they are reviewing their cake decorating policies that up until now only censored profanity.The company said that they realize that they may have offended some people by decorating the cake. One shopper said he wouldn't have made the cake and that the store should have had better sense. Others thought the store just simply honored the family's constitutional right.

"I hate it! I hate it, but how can you say they aren't allowed. If you are going to allow these freedoms that are in our constitution, sometimes it goes against what we believe," said shopper Denise Ackley from Easton.

Paul Lambert of Bangor, Pa had a more interesting analogy for the controversy. "If his parents named him Jesus Christ, I'm sure they would put Jesus Christ on the cake," Lambert said.

Old news for sure, but hey. I'm going to ignore for a second why on earth people would name their child Adolf Hitler and focus more on how similar this case is to Harry Potter. Remember how in Harry Potter, people were so afraid of Voldemort's name? I kinda see the same thing here. Dudes, it's just a name on a cake. What on earth did they think would happen? The cake would sprout horns and will kill all the non-superior races in the city?

I think the real question here is :

Why would the parents name their poor child Adolf Hitler?

It's not like he won the name in a lottery. The only reasons I can think of are:
A) The parents are neonazis
B) It's a family name, and the parents are too stupid to realize why it would cause problems
C) The parents named him that specifically so they could engage in the inevitable discrimination lawsuit

Yeah, I rage a little whenever someone presents the "You're discriminating against me by denying my constitutional right to be discriminatory!" argument.

On the other hand, it's pretty arbitrary and stupid that they have rules about what you can or cannot decorate a cake with. If I wanted to get my friend a cake that said "HAPPY MOTHERFUCKING BIRTHDAY", I should be allowed. Stupid elitist power-mongering cakemakers.

I can quite honestly say I was not expecting a thread titled "Adolf Hitler Cake" to pop up when I logged on this morning.

Child's name aside, I have to say I stand for putting whatever you want on a cake.  It doesn't mean anything, doesn't hurt anyone, and is really just so much icing.  It's not good for your teeth, but it's not exactly going to kill you.

Reminds me of when the Zappa family tried to name their son "Dweezil".  The doctors refused to put that name on the birth certificate.  Of course, they still called him that all throughout childhood, so it didn't make all that huge of a difference in any case.

He has since officially and legally changed his name to Dweezil Zappa.


Yeah, "freedom" doesn't mean the same as "justice".  A freedom is just that, the freedom to act according to your own decisions.  Not everyone makes decisions the rest of us can agree with.  But they're just as free to make their decisions as we are to make ours.

On one hand, I think that the cake-makers are overreacting. It is a private business, and they can deny service to anyone, but seriously, it's just a CAKE. It's not like they're asking to have "Adolf Hitler" carved into a national monument.

On the other hand, I think that the parents should have been more... intelligent when naming their little son. They can't honestly say that they never saw this coming. Like kinseti said, it seems to me like they were just waiting for an opportunity like this. Wouldn't be surprised if on their wedding night they said, "Let's name our first son Adolf Hitler so we can stir up a bunch of controversy and win some big-ass discrimination lawsuit."

In the end, I think that the cake people need to just stop making a big deal. Adolf Hitler is in the past, and if we as humans can't just learn from our mistakes and move on, we're doomed to be a bunch of apathetic whiny losers.

Reminds me of some Pokemon "scandal" that I remember. Some Pokemon card had a backwards Swastika on the picture. The artist was getting a lot of flak for being anti-Semitic, but it turns out that it wasn't a backwards swastika at all, it was a symbol that represents good luck in Japanese culture.

If someone was anti-Semitic, I don't think that they'd display their hatred in a Pokemon card. Unless of course they were just a really really incompetent Nazi.
