His horrors override his contributions. They were made as weapons of war, not the tools we use today. Congratulations go to Russian and American scientists who took those plans and made not-weapons out of them.

But the first teams of scientists were working on making them into weapons, just American or Soviet weapons, not German ones. I'd argue that almost all of the scientists (even the Germans like Van something or another) are perfectly appreciable.

Mind you, I'm about 95% sure that IWM is being sarcastic here.

Yeah, like ICBMs and all.
And do you remember that joke? "why did USA get to the Moon before Soviets did? -the had better Germans"

Damn right, if there's one thing America knows, it's getting the better Germans.

I assume you mean "Congratulations to the German scientists the Americans and Russians ran away with so they could get said scientists to build them weapons instead of the Germans"?

lolwut.

Considerable amount yes.

Large amount of humanity?

It's only... 20 millions out of 5 billions? That's... not large enough, amirite?

Also, that man made rockets possible.
Thereby computers.
At least acknowledge that, man.
So, as long as I don't kill you I'm not harming you? I mean, why should you care if I kill members of your family, level your hometown and wreck the whole economy of your country?

And saying that Hitler was responsible for computers is a bit of a stretch. I suppose you could say he is, because Americans made ENIAC to aid them in WW2 (it wasn't made in time, though). But I think that if anyone should get credit for electronic computers, it should be USA. Also, I fail to see how rockets lead to computers.

as in: you need computers to help you with doing rocket science.

Von Braun did it just fine without computers. Rockets pre-date electronic computers, you know. And if we're talking mechanical computers, then the credit goes to Babbage, who had nothing to do with WW2, mainly because he died in the 19th century.

It's all true, but the idea is that the space race between USA and USSR is what gave computer science the reason to evolve.

I think that even without the space race, computers would evolve. They're extremely useful for stock exchanges or for running corporations. As expensive as they were, it was still much cheaper than paying people to do all those calculations by hand.

The Space Race is what gave it the reason to evolve at the pace that it did.

It would have evolved anyway, war simply increases the speed at which innovations are made.

Dunno, capitalism tends to make things go fast too. Most of the evolution of computers has been driven by private enterprise, after all.

That's because capitalism has much in common with war.

Do I sense sarcasm?

If it's not it then I say that any form of government is good as long as people in it are happy.
I blame what's happening now on capitalism.
I'm afraid I won't find employment  :-\

And the computers didn't evolve rapidly because of rocket science. They evolved so fast because of the few talented people with bright ideas waging commercial law against each other.

Yes Bill Gates, and Google creators I'm looking at you.
