Stuck on nothing
« on: October 21, 2009, 10:20:39 am »

I like to leave DF running in the background whilst I read the internet or somesuch. However, I  have been going back to my forts to find certain dwarves stuck.

On the floor.

With nothing around them.

They just stay on one floor tile, hungry and thirsty, until they die. Why is this happening? I lost two fortress guards and a miner this way! Well, actually, I quit and reloaded before the miner died, but still.

Make sure they're able to path to your food and booze stockpiles.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Most likely they were sealed in the room accidentally. One of the easiest ways to do that is with incorrect use of ramps. Consider using stairs, or read up on how ramps work.

I once had a whole mess of dwarves die in my "noble safety room", which was ludicrously expensive and nice and *seriously* not supposed to kill the nobles.  A whole smorgasboard of food and drink was kept on the upper level.

The exit from the room was a ramp that didn't have any walls near it.  So no dwarves could pass through it.

Oops.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Or they built a workshop with doors covered by one of the impassable tiles, and sealed themselves in.  Another classic.

(diagrams for each workshop are in the wiki.)

Also, make sure they're not surrounded by "outside" tiles with "Dwarves stay inside" set. I had that cause something similar once.

You need to place an underground meeting zone for that order to work properly. Otherwise, they stay locked in place until you do.

Just for your edification.

Anyways, Cespinarve's problem sounds like the classic "wrestlers locked into a sparring match to the death" bug. In order to dislodge them, you need to knock them out with a cave-in, or possibly channel under them to get them to move.

If the problem isn't an access problem. Fortress guard deaths suggest the wrestling bug, but the miner sounds like an access problem.

Eyah, that seems pretty much the case, wxcept for the miner. I'm almsot positive he wasn't cut off. And it was two guards stuck on top of each other.

The other day, I found out that apparently a dwarf will stand outdoors with his beard in his hands and not move an inch if orders say he's not supposed to go outside, he's outside, there's no jobs inside to take, and there's no meeting area.

Another vote in favor of having meeting areas in Safe Locations.

This is a Dwarven corpse. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of pathetic and menaces with spikes of fail.
