Glass Walls vs Glass Windows, which to choose?
« on: October 21, 2009, 12:36:53 am »

In my current Fortress, I have a Bottomless pit that I've carved out so its a uniform circle all the way down, my plan is to make it a single central column my Dwarfs can gaze "Safely" into through Glass windows... However Ive found its faster making Green Glass Blocks and making walls instead... So.. The question is is there any difference between enclosing an area in glass "walls" or Making individual glass Windows and enclosing an area that way?

Ask not what the Dwarfs can do for you...
But ask.... why are they drunk all the time?

I think windows need to be next to a wall. And windows can be destroyed by creatures that have the [BUILDINGDESTROYER] tag.

Windows need to be built next to a wall, or next to another window.
And windows do not count as walls; Built glass blocks do. So, blocks are a wall on z+0, and a floor on z+1, while windows are, just a window in an open space.
If you want your dwarves to look straight down in the pit, you'll need blocks. (EDIT:corrected by Magua)

Windows do have the advantage of generating happy thoughts though.

Dwarves can *really* see through windows, but can't see through blocks.  This means if they see creatures through the window, they'll get scared.

It can get really annoying.

But windows are valuable, and dwarves will get happy thoughts looking at them.  Blocks are simply construction materials.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

blocks only count if the dwarf is doing something in the designated room they are in.  Windows are appreciable.

And you can incrust them with gems.

And line them with bones.

And stud them with metal.

Sure you wont see much through one with 50 decorations, but you'll get a happy thought.

Windows need to be built next to a wall, or next to another window.

What version are you using? I've built windows in open space and not next to walls or anything. They are placed in the same way as most buildings.

In Visual Fortress window are transparent, walls are not so it can make a LOT of difference to the look of things when/if you want to visualise them.

Seconded.

Gem windows, using glass "Gems". I think that will give you a higher value than glass "Windows." Also, even less time/material efficent.
Or use real gems.

TBH, I think that all dwarf fortress problem solving falls either on the "Rube Goldberg" method, or the "pharaonic" one.
{Unicorns} produce more bones if the werewolf rips them apart before they die.

gem windows can't be decorated.  those three gems as decorations on an exceptional glass window will nudge it that much higher.

That's interesting.

There is no real reason to do it, but since dwarves can "see" something behind a glass window, could you, say, make a display case with some kind of artifact item behind it and they could still get a happy thought from it?
