So, I am trying to colapse multiple Z levels at once.
« on: October 20, 2009, 08:47:53 pm »

My question; can it be done?

I have mined all the way under it, and cut a channel all the way around it, as far as I can tell it is now a magical floating mountain.

I've checked it over many many times and I can't find any place I may have missed. I've even looked in VisualFortress and can't find any spots still connected.

Granted, it is a very large area I am trying to collapse. I could have missed something all thirty something times I have checked.  -_-

By any chance did you disable cave-ins in init.txt?

If not, then you're still missing a spot. Make sure you don't have any stairs in there somewhere, since those provide support.

Nope, I have not made any changed to that file.

Ugh, I guess I'll keep going over it. I thought this would be easier than channeling every level... I guess I was wrong.

Another question, if I collapse a five Z level mountain, will every Z level be destroyed? That is was I am trying to do.

If the mountain is solid, only the level you are collapsing will cave in. If it's hollowed out with nothing but floors remaining, the whole thing will collapse once you pull the lever connected to the suppourts holding those floors up.

Damn, that was a waste of time then. Thanks for the info.

I suppose it is time to channel the mountain now.

Actually, using ramps wouls be faster and safer. It does produce a heck of alot of lag, but just make sure there are no trees on it (which would cause a cave in) and you can leave it unsupervised, unlike channels. But however you want to do it.

What do you mean? Use ramps how?

If you designate the whole area as ramps, one level at a time, starting at the top, they take out the floor above them - no floor above = no chance of cave in.

Actually, using ramps wouls be faster and safer...

Only in hindsight. Now that he's dug in it, it might be a nightmare either way.

JT - if you go with that, just be VERY CAREFUL to channel out above any tunneling that you've done, that will not have a ramp dug under it.

Well, this is actually only the first of three I need to do, so hopefully that will come in handy.

Actually, if there is a tree above the spot you are doing the ramp under, the tree will fall on the miner, creating a cave in.

In a previous fort, I did have a few cave ins happen for seemingly no reason when doing the ramps. Not sure what happened then, but 99% of the time it's completely safe.

Barring trees, ramps are safer.

However, ramps still need to be done one z-level at a time, from the top down.

If you mine out the area, channel the edges, and collapse it, you can designate it all at once.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

you can collapse multiple z levels. the trick is to plan ahead.

if you are punching a hole from the surface to a point lower down, you can just mine out the area you want gone and then build a floor over it (that is a z level above the surface) that is held up by a support (easy way to do this is to build a wall and ramp, or stairwell and then deconstruct it once your "punch" is done) once everything is in order, tell a mechanic to link a lever to the support and pull. this should result in the support deconstructing, dropping the floor which will act like a hole punch as it goes through the levels of mined out stone untill it hits a solid level.

Under ground you can do the same thing, except the top layer has to be 1 square wider on all sides so that you can get a proper punch going, otherwise you have a 1 square ring of floors on teh way down.

The OP was asking about multiple unmined levels.  The concept of mining out a level and just leaving floors is defeating the point. ;)

You can't collapse unmined areas over multiple Z-levels. They just stay together as a lump.

My strategy is to mine the areas out, put in a support at the bottom, and either supports or constructed walls supporting each floor, channel them free, then just hook a support to a lever, evacuate everyone, pull, and watch it collapse like a house of cards.

Keep in mind that the level in which all the other levels land will take damage. Some floors could be destroyed, So collapsing levels isn't exactly for those who want everything neat and clean-cut.
