Author Topic: Just wondering... again. (this time on DF, ASCII and intelligence)  (Read 1907 times)

A quote:The intelligence filter of DF and ASCII, or why people on this board are so much smarter than everywhere else.

If you ask me this is an utterly stupid reaction to DF and ASCII and that they would spouse only smart people. I play ASCII.

Also, does this make people who play with graphics packs less intelligent?

I wouldn't say there's much of a correlation. It's more the complexity of DF than the ASCII that causes this. That and the obscurity. It means that it attracts a rather narrow crowd of usually rather introvert and polite people.

Funny how one of the stupidest quotes originates in one of the "smartest" communities, eh?

I just can not understand why it is called for as such a hard game, I personally have more problems with warcraft then I've ever had with Dwarf Fortress.

It also helps that B12 has an active moderator. Can't say that for many other forums.

Well, I play ASCII only, and I consider myself a blithering idiot.  Proof negative.

Really, this is such a horribly inflammatory topic that I don't know why anyone even bothers bringing it up.  The only reason anyone would ever say that playing a game a particular way or a particular type of game makes a person smarter is to invent another excuse to placate their own ego.  Let us be done with this.

...the obscurity. It means that it attracts a rather narrow crowd of usually rather introvert and polite people.

I think these are much more accurate explanations.

I can not see why having an active moderator makes a game more intelectual, exept if you are stating the part where Toady shoots most derailing threads right trough the head.

The obscurity would explain some for me, but introvert and polite does not mean a relation to intelligence imo.

Do understand that I am not looking for a flame war, I am merely trying to understand why people have stated this and how others think about it.

We aren't intelligent, we just aren't idiots. That's what it means.

Finding ways of burning more creatures? Or kill them?
While completely humanlike, this really sounds rather un- than intelligent.

DF really does filter people, so the forums are filled with very patient people.

"Also, does this make people who play with graphics packs less intelligent?"
Unless you rate someone's intelligence based on the eye-ball nerves, you be lookin in the wrong place.

To make it intelligent, do we have to do it in hilariously roundabout ways?
