According to The All-Knowing Wanda, Navy rum was 95.5 proof, then diluted with water 4:1, putting four-water grog at 19.1 proof (9.55% alchohol by volume), which seems a bit high for one's daily water intake, especially considering they're not getting any water from salt pork and oatmeal (most people take in quite a large amount of water via solid food). There's got to be another part of the equation.

Right, before 1655 they just brought beer, but a gallon per day per seaman (PLUS water) eventually started taking up too much space, so they started switching to rum-spiked water in 1655. That's three hundred years of grog.

Well, we are dealing with sailors, which takes us back toward the actual topic as we remember that they're eating 10,000 calories a day. It's quite possible that a gallon of 20 proof grog had the same effect as 8 oz. of wine cooler would on you or me.

They had to have more water rations more than what that specifies.

That says 1 quart of water + 1/2 pint of rum. So 2.5 pints, and a gallon is 8 pints. Thats less than a third of the specified ration of beer from the other site.

Even without taking into account the alcohol content, thats only 40 ounces. I've heard it said that you should drink about 20 ounces for every hour of strenuous exercise just to make up for the loss from sweating, and that's not even accounting for the standard intake of water you need (I've heard anything from 64 ounces to 1/2 your body weight in ounces). The sailors work probably accounted for at least 2 hours of strenuous exercise, if not more - plus their food was usually of the dry variety, so they didn't get water from it.

The sailors would be severely dehydrated if thats all the water they got.


Its funny how a discussion topic for a game called Fief turned into a discussion on food intake which turned into a discussion on maritime rations which turned into a discussion on grog and water rations.

but thats the point; they were NOT eating that many calories. That was some BS made up number with no real citation.

Well... back on topic... I added time and seasons to the game last night.  I think I'm going to try a more turn-based time-interval system for the game as it stands for the 2D version.  Kind of like UnReal World if you've played that.  Basically each task takes a certain amount of time.  As of now taking a walking step, with the 5-ft grid system, takes approx. 1.135 seconds.  (This is based off the idea that it takes 20 min to walk a mile).  Thats assuming your facing the right direction, it'll take longer to take backward steps, and so forth.  I'll be adding facing into the game soon.

Grog is heavily watered down rum.

Which is to say, that a gallon of 20 proof grog is a gallon of 20 proof, heavily watered down rum.

Good god watching a naval battle would be amazing. A load of pissed sailors laughing and singing as they fire pistols in the enemies general direction and flail swords at each other, falling into the water as they try to board and generally fucking everything up.

Awesome. Be sure to add hunting, fletching, and being able to use every single part of the body. Including boars intestines (because you can only support so many kids.)
