Forumite & Forum Culture Summary.
« on: October 19, 2009, 01:26:55 pm »

So, every time I register on a new forum, or if I come back to a forum after being away for a while, I wish that there was some way to get a hang of what was going on without having to read through months of posts on an active forum.

So, I thought we might do this favour to newcomers, and we who contribute might learn something new about parts of the forum we rarely visit or have simply missed to! SO I decided to make this topic.

This topic should cover the legendary forumites, important memes, forum history, and other sites related to the community. This is for the community, culture, etc. of the forums and bay 12, focusing on the finally section. It is not about DF, or Toady and the official parts of the sites, or the various DF help sites and utilities, or even legendary community forts and such. Those belong here or in official topics made by Toady. This topic should be vaguely wiki-like in the format of its articles.
Notice that the forumites section are for those that have some measure of recognition, do not just add yourself unless you have a good reason to believe you are well known to the community at large and part of it's legends and ambience.

SOME (examples of) TOPICS THAT SHOULD BE MADE:

Forumites:
 - Armok
 - Sofia (previously SJ)
 - Vester
 - Inaluct
 - The God Damned Worker Drone
 - Fenrir
 ...
Memes:
 - The name "Urist"
 - Carp and Elephants
 - Penguins, Cyborgs, and other avatar fads. Both an explanation of the phenomena and a list of the fads with approximate dates.
 ...
Places and Phenomena:
 - The Board That Must Not be Linked, new VN.
 - The benevolent Toad: "Maintain chill composure"
 - The cult of Dwarf Fortress.
 - The Various Nonsense.
 - Battle of the Gods (games)
 - RTD, Mafia, and other popular games.
 - The intelligence filter of DF and ASCII, or why people on this board are so much smarter than everywhere else.
 - The Ambient roleplay, bound to no single topic. In random topics or in "travern" topics.

History:
 - Prehistory: a timeline from the founding of bay 12 to the fall of the new VN
 - History: An updating timeline stretching from the fall of new VN to the present day.
 - A focus study on the Various Nonsense
 - Statistics: graphs for forum traffic, DF downloads, traffic to related sites (wiki, DFMA, DFFD)
 - List of fourmites, with dates of joining, dates where they went inactive (if applicable), general things they are famous for, what sub forums they are active in, etc.
 ...

REMEMBER; You can suggest topics that should be written, or just write about anything you'd like, if it's to unimportant you might not get it linked in the OP but that is the only measure of notability! Also remember that even already written articles can be subject of improvement, and that forum cultures are ever-changing! Also note that while I stated the topic, and will try to contribute a bit and keep the OP updated, I in no way promise anything or take ownership or responsibility of this project, and if I disappear/loose interest in the topic, I strongly urge that someone else should simply make a new topic and copy everything over.

Also, if this topic prospers, it might be an idea to sticky it.

In my humble opinion it is somewhat of a blessing to newcomers to have no knowledge of VN. In fact, the best thing to do would be to leave it behind completely and never mention it again, that way we won't have to tell them anything.

The "Forumites" section looks rather small. I think there are a bit more notable forumusers than that here.

I don't like that you placed yourself on top. Also, no Aqizzar? Is that a snub?

Aqizzar and his chin certainly approach meme status on these forums.

Meh, as if I don't deserve a snubbing.  I've been kind of an ass lately, and did tell Armok to go cram his many pesterings for someone to save VN threads for him.

I don't think this summary should happen, it's not really necessary to have an encyclopedia on what we do here.  It's easy to pick it up.

If I did, however, I would think the "Sofia is a pervert" meme should be in there.

Response to Ninja:  The request to cram was totally deserved.  If he wants the threads saved, he should copy and paste them by hand into notebook.  It's not that difficult, and I can't see why you would want to do it.  The "VN is a cesspit" meme is almost as run into the ground as the "Sofia is a pervert" meme.  Yes, VN is a cesspit.  Yes, Sofia is a pervert.  These things do not need to be brought to the table every time the patron subject is.

Yeah we really don't need this... And how could you not include the IMMACULATE CHIN!

I also agree that VN is dead and should be left as such, I personally don't even think it should be preserved.

Srsly, overinflated ego much. I would not include thyself upon a list of famous forumites. Thou art easily overlooked.

1.57% of posts in community games and stories are mine. I'm either pathetic or a feature, you decide.
