Seeds
« on: October 19, 2009, 12:11:33 pm »

How do I get seeds from plants that I picked up from outside(ie via gather plants). Also do some orders destroy seeds? I'm getting tried of running out of everything save for plump helmets and pigtails. I probably don't make a lot of sense, but I'll clarify if necessary. Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure that the only way that seeds are destroyed is via cooking, but that's off by default.  Check your (z) menu, then kitchen.

Otherwise, do you have an actual place to store your seeds,  as in a stockpile?  Is it full?

Are you out of seeds and plants?  Because you need to eat, brew, or process a plant to get seeds back from it.

Also, a few plants are seedless.  check the wiki.

You get seeds whenever your dwarves eat something, brew something, grind something, weave something or process something. The kitchen can destroy seeds, but it seems that the likely cause is your planting method.

Some plants can only be planted in certain seasons, and if it is to late the planting list turns red. To plant seeds from outside, you need to plant them outside. Tundras and mountains do not support farming at all (you get a message telling you the biome has no growable plants.)

It could also be that you farmers are too inexperienced to get crop, and the seed is destroyed as a result. Hope this helps.

If you're not careful, it's easy to run out of seeds by cooking prepared meals out of all of your plants, as cooking meals gives no seeds back.  It is also possible to cook prepared meals out of your seeds directly.

I tend to solve this by not letting raw plants be cooked -- I either brew them, or cook their extracts (syrup, sugar, etc)

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Cooking seeds is off by default, but not cooking plants that the seeds are in - that will destroy them also.  And that gets turned ON automatically every time you find a new type of plant, so you have to be careful, or your newly found whip vine will get cooked up with the cat-tallow and quarry bush leaves into something less than optimal.

Once I have my farms up to speed, I <f>orbid one or two planting's worth of each seed type - then, even if I screw up, I have a buffer to fall back on.  Meanwhile, I manipulate stocks so I can train a junior cook on seed biscuits - mmmmm.... low quality, and readily tradable.

Vermin animals, like rats and lizards, can also eat seeds.

Store the seeds in bags inside barrels too protect them. And have a few cats keeping the vermin population down.

Actually, the alternative is to let seeds reach 200 in every category. The game does not allow more than that, so seed production stops, and cleanup stops being necessary.
