Grizzly bear helps himself.
« on: October 19, 2009, 04:27:00 am »

On my recently started fortress, I saw something in the announcements I had not seen before:
A grizzly bear has guzzled some (Whip whine[25])!
A grizzly bear has guzzled some (Fisher berry whine[25])!

Has this happened to anyone else?
What animals are also able to do this?
Do bears prefer some type of wine?
WILL THIS SATISFY ITS THIRST FOR BLOOD!?!?

The wine is sitting in my depo, Its from the hippy elves on there so that might have something to do with it.

Bears, in their raws, have a tag which makes them do so. So, take all your booze underground as soon as possible.

Well, its not my booze they are guzzeling :)
I just hope it doesn't realise dwarves have a 40% booze percentage in their bodies.

I believe the civilisation of the traders will still hold you responsible in their profit / loss calculations for trading with you. (Which I think only effects how many wagons/mules they send)

But I also heard that a profitable trade relationship will result in cloth, lots of it, due to its high weight/value ratio.

That is currently believed to be the case, yes.

Black Bears also have the [GUZZLER] tag (which means they will immediately drink an entire barrel full of booze if they come into contact with one). I think Dark Gnomes have it as well, along with one or two other critters.

Do bears really like alcohol? If so I'm off to the woods with a six and some vodka.

If you mean in reality, there are urban ledgends of bears drinking alcohol. The few recorded cases of bears being 'domesticated' (i use the term lightly) also indicate that the bears did indeed enjoy alcohol. There's an instance of a bear that basically moved in with a squad of Russian soldiers, the soldiers rewarded him with barrels of Vodka. There's also plenty of stories of bears drinking the Vodka as it's sitting in barrels as part of the overnight 'remove all the ice until ice stops forming' distillation process.

Instances of animals that naturally come into contact with alcohol (such as certain species of birds, mostly finches, and a certain american cactus) indicate that animals like alcohol just as much as humans do; it's just harder for them to get a hold of it.

When you think about it though, people like alcohol, why wouldn't other animals like it too? Although the thought of a hungover grizzly terrifies me.

Hm, interesting stuff. I've done some research into mead (honey wine) making and plan to do some brewing in the future. It might be interesting to note than in some cases honey could have fermented on it's own in the wild and that bears may have enjoyed this alcoholic content in the fermenting honey. This is also how some people speculate mead may have been discovered - it could easily have been discovered by bears first. Maybe their rumored love for alcohol stems from instances of this occuring long long ago with their bear ancestors.

It's funny you folks brought this up this just happened on the 17th.

"HAYWARD, Wis. - Shoppers in a Wisconsin grocery store got an unexpected surprise when a 125-pound black bear wandered inside and headed straight for the beer cooler.

The bear stopped Friday night at Marketplace Foods in Hayward, about 140 miles northeast of Minneapolis, sauntering through the automatic doors and heading straight for the liquor department, WEAU-TV reported.

It calmly climbed up 12 feet onto a shelf in the beer cooler where it sat for about an hour while employees helped evacuate customers and summoned wildlife officials."

I can't say he was going after the alcohol or not I'm thinking he just couldn't spell lol

Grizzly bear cancels drink your wine: bear-bagged

Seriously, bear-bagging would be an awesome and entirely pointless addition to the game.

Don't forget Voytek, the Iranian bear who joined Polish troops in battle during the second world war.

This bear was Enlisted, too. It had a name, rank, and military number. It carried ammunition to and from the fighting men during battle and took part in the Italian Campaign.

It liked to drink beer, smoke cigarettes, and would wrestle with the troops of its unit. It drank beer just like any Enlisted soldier.

This bear even captured an enemy spy.

And "freak shows" had "Pig-faced women", which were bears made drunk enough to be able to shave them (giving them a pig-like face) and dress them up in women's clothing.

(The question beckons... who first decided that it was worth enough trouble to shave a bear and see what they looked like? :)

Ironically, I'm sure alcohol was involved.

My new goal in life is to find a bear to  be my drinking buddy.

If I can drink a bear under the table, I can do anything.
