Big enough bedroom for about 60 dwarves?
« on: October 18, 2009, 11:37:02 pm »

to share in a giant communal bedroom orgy like thing?

...I mean, I'll admit that it's huge. But is it huge ENOUGH? ;o_O

EDIT: I just realized that smoothing and engraving this thing will take forever. ;>.<

Well, it's way too big, the rooms cannot stretch the entire length of it, but every dwarf will still have a legendary room provided your engravers are good.
Personally, I only make like a 31x31 room, and that's that, enough room for any dwarves I may have, and nearly every tile is a masterful engraving.

He could have several split rooms set for their respective maximums. I think walls are worth more than floors, so if half of the tiles are floor and the other half are walls in a checkerboard pattern with engravings on everything then you could fit the floor tiles with beds and make the best hive ever.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Crap in a bucket, I hadn't thought of that!

Ah well. All the extra work will be good for them. Them being my miners and engravers and haulers to clear out the stone because I feel like being sadistic. After all if it's worth doing, than it's worth overdoing by quite a large amount.

Let's see ...

In the image resolution one tile is 5 x 8 pixels ... the entire bedroom area is 459 x 643 pixels ...
This means you can fit ... 92 x 80 ... 7360 beds in there. If you want each room to be 31x31 in size that'll be.. 7360 divided by 961 ... about 7,61.

Oh and also you forgot how long it'll take to haul all the rock out of the way.

In the interim between my making this post and my actually starting out on the project the rock is completely moved out of the way and my engravers are nearly halfway done with smoothing. :D

Granted, this took a good half day real time. >_>

Indeed?

At best, a Legendary +5 only gives about 25% masterwork results, right?  That's some pretty good shootin', Tex!  8)

Since the penalty for shared rooms is applied only once (room value drops by 75%), it doesn't matter if you have 2 dwarves sharing a room, or 200.

Also, since dwarves are deeper sleepers than supposed (sure, the noise of the mason workshop bothers them, but people stepping on their heads does not), you can just cram all those beds into as small an area as possible.  Toss a single artifact piece of furniture in there, and bam, everybody's got a royal bedroom.

Only problem is... you cant get them to stow away their stuff lying around, as there is no way of making them share cabinets, right?

If there's a way to make them share storage, lemme know!

Urist Salvedangers, Queen has been miserable lately.  She was very upset by a lesser's pretentious sleeping arrangements lately.

If you mod the game to allow iron beds you can clean the trash with magma.

I *believe* (but have not tested) that if you give each of the dwarves' a specific bed in that room (as opposed to making a single one a very large barracks), then they will also "own" any cabinets/bags that might be in that room.

At least, checking my current fort, the cabinets and coffers in each room are not "owned" by the dwarf (like things put inside them are).  I think it's a function of being in a room owned by the dwarf, so they *should* be shareable.

So basically.... make big hall with beds for every dwarf (or their family), assign a bedroom from every bed, spanning the whole thing and cram in an assload of storage containers....

Sounds as if it could work. Is a lot of clicking but still better and more convenient than constructing 120 lil apartments.

Well, by the time they get finished smoothing the whole fort they are well past legendary +5. :)
