Why have my Champions stop sparring? There off duty, bed set to barracks, floor empty, not doing, anything still not sparring.

I found the chance of sparring higher when the guards are set on 'chase oppenents' rather than 'guard spot'

Check their wounds screens. If they've got any sort of injury to their nervous system (lower spine, upper spine, neck, or brain), they will never spar again.

I'll only tell how if asked. Cheating, even though I do it frequently and unabashedly, is something I'm uncomfortable propagating on the forums, and especially the Gameplay Questions forum.

Perhaps to train up in additional weapons, or just to keep them happy (military and guards get HUGE happiness boosts from sparring, to the point that they're often the happiest dwarves in the entire fortress).

To improve skills further. They don't actually stop at legendary. They keep gaining experience and skill, just not adjectives.

When sparring, weapon skill determines whether the hit does damage or not (high skill = no damage), but there's always the chance that a champion can fumble and deal significant damage (due to their very high strength). Recruits, on the other hand, are still learning to use their weaopns, so they're far more likely to accidentally inflict serious damage.

I prefer to give my military high quality armor and weapons and turn them loose on each other - anybody who dies was clearly not tough enough. My current squad of 7 hammerdwarves was allowed to wrestle to no-label Wrestling in exceptional/masterwork Adamantime armor, then was given exceptional Adamantine war hammers and all trained to become Champions within 2 seasons. All of them started as haulers, all stats maxed from having legendary social skills.
