Back to the part about separating masonry and construction, how about making a construction labor that's responsible for making anything built out of stone/wood/metal/glass blocks.  Other than weight, a blocks a block, if you can build something out of one type you should be able to use the other types.  Maybe make it responsible for removing constructions too.  Also, masons, carpenters and metal smiths will still be in charge of things made out of raw stone, logs, and bars.

This is sort of the way I'd tend, too. For simplicity's sake, rather than because building something out of logs is the same as using blocks or bars. I mean, ideas of rope bindings, nails, welding or whatever they actually use are abstracted out at the moment. But one construction task, possibly merged with architecture or possibly not, makes a lot of sense.

And then possibly merging mason's shop jobs with stonecrafting, and carpenter's shop jobs with woodcrafting. Or again, possibly not; people seem to object to this a lot, though I still don't fully understand why.

Because this was popular when I suggested it and I just discovered the DF Eternal Suggestions thread; I'm just bumping this to let everyone know I'm adding it to the voting possibilities.
