2D Version question.
« on: October 18, 2009, 03:50:33 pm »

I've been playing the latest 2D version of DF (Called Packsilvers, with madness similar to Boatmurdered, but in far less amount), and i got some questions.

1. Aqueducts. I want to pour some magma into the chasm so i can finally dump refuse down there without its denizens crawling up to have some Fun. Though channeling will most likely kill my miner by result of him not getting out of the way fast enough. I read that you could walk under an aqueduct somewhere, and this would probably not be as harmful to my dwarves. How do these work?

2. Roads. Is the "not being to be able to build on rock" intentional? Is it mandatory to build around it, or can you just smooth out holes in the road?

3. Why does it seem like insane stuff happens a lot more often in the 2D version than the 3D?

1) Sorry, I forgot how that worked. Maybe the old wiki (archive, link in present wiki) will help you there

2) Smooth the rocks that are in the way, and you will be able to build your road

3) The 2D version was much harder than the present version. Farming / irrigating is more difficult, creatures will keep spawning from wells, river and chasm, unless
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
.. Permaflooding is a danger if you don't know how to prevent it.. You need steel to build over magma... King will doom your fortress.. More nobles making silly demands... Etc. etc.
EDIT: And, oh. Yeah.. The Elephants. Gods! The Elephants. Run!!!!!

EDIT2: I thought I'd be nice, and get you a link for the old wiki.. I thought it was in the new wiki, but I can't find it anymore. I hope the old wiki archive is still up somewhere.. It was quite complete for the 2D version.

Some vandal going by the name of Briess (going by the page history) removed the link from the front page of the wiki!  It is as follows: http://archive.dwarffortresswiki.net/

Someone who messes with the wiki, please put the link back there.

Wait.  That link doesn't WORK now.  Odd.

I wouldn't consider Briess a vandal since (s)he actually maintains the wiki in the first place. I'll ask to see if that's intentional.

It is possible that Briess thought the archive was just 'some outdated history version', and did not include it when kindly moving the wiki under his hosting services.
I hope, that if so, there still is some backup. The old wiki still is invaluable for people wanting to play the old 2D version.

I have attempted to view it with archive.org, and...  although the text is there, the images are not, and it just looks horrible.

Yeah, the reason i were asking these questions was that i can't look up the wiki archive.

Also, i already know about the steel bridges over magma, the creatures crawling up from the chasm (that's why asked about the aqueduct ;)) and the more abundant nobles. My dwarves are already dying left and right from:

*Sparring accidents
*Strange moods
*Fire Men
*Wild animals (rarely)
*Looting the bodies of previously fallen dwarves. (Oh gods, why isn't there a forbid function. D:)

And i probably don't need more Fun. :)

Edit: Oh, and there's also Goblin Snatchers. The Fortress Guard is actually proving useful for once.

Edit edit: Alright, i managed to get magma to the chasm via channels anyway, without any burning crispy death to any miners. How long do i need to pour magma into this thing until its safe to dump refuse in there?

It should get a red line down the middle when it's "full", as I understand it. At that point you should be safe.
