No artifacts
« on: October 18, 2009, 02:45:25 pm »

I'm well into my third year with this fortress and I've yet to get a strange mood. Here's the rundown:

 * I have well over 20 dwarves with moodable professions (4x miner, 2x woodworker, 2x mason, 5x furnace operator, 3x jeweler, 2x bonecarver, 1x leatherworker, 2x clothier, 1x weaver, 1x mechanic)
 * My fortress has dug out way more than 1 embark tile
 * I've created way more than 200 items. Hell, I have 60 sets of bone bolts made from orcs, alone.
 * Artifacts are set to YES in init.txt

Normally I get my first artifact very shortly after my 20th eligible dwarf arrives on the map. So what's going on here? I've made my save available (requires Dig Deeper mod) if you want to take a look.

There is a random factor. I ran into the same problem with my current fort (with a modified version of Dig Deeper), I didn't get my first mood until shortly after my Expedition Leader became Mayor.

According to the Wiki, as soon as you meet the prerequisites you have a 2.7% chance per day of getting a mood, or a 48.97% chance per season. So you may never get a mood at all, but odds are it will be within the year.

3rd year is a long time, but I think the wiki is poorly phrased.

The wiki editor who posted that determined there was a 1/500 chance about 10-11 times/day after ~3 months - which works out to be about 2.7%/day, or about a 50% chance per month.

But whether 2.7%/day, or 50%/month, or whatever, there is no failsafe cap - the %'s don't increment until they reach 100% at some point.  So, with so many players and so many games, it's probably - almost inevitable - that someone, sometime, will get bent by the odds and (almost) never have a mood.

A 50% chance/month is not the same as once every 2 months (5 months after the time delay) - except averaged across time.

Or it's a bug. Unfortunately, no way to tell the diff.  :-\

Whelp, one of my metalcrafters just woke up out of a sound sleep to be possessed. So I guess I was just unusually unlucky.

In other news, the human caravan just fled after getting ambushed. Fortunately their wagon with all the wood on it got killed, so at least I'll be able to continue my pumping tower project (which needed wood for the power axles).

Human caravans are usually well protected ... what weaklings did you encounter who flee like this?

The crossbow squad, 'The Bolts of Fleeing' wouldn't even show up.

Ones that were leading their guards by enough tiles that the wagon got killed before the guards could catch up.

Next time they show up I'm sending my champions out to escort them. I keep forgetting about the goblins' ambush abilities...

2 guards is well protected? If they spawn on the opposite side of the map, they'll be spread out. 8 bow gobs can take down 2 humans easy.

Let's be honest - one bow gobbo usually can if the humans have no archers themselves.  :-\
