So this is a pretty straightforward question ...

First year of the fortress, I brought soldiers because I embarked in a hostile enviroment. Before the outpost liaison had arrived I had one miner with a broken leg (due to stupidity) and one hammerdwarf with a broken lower body & leg (mauled by a giant cougar) and one hammerdwarf whose left arm has been ripped clean off by a skeletal cave crocodile.

I managed to get them all to an infirmary and in year two they are all out of bed ... except for the one-armed hammerdwarf.

I like the idea of having her swinging her *iron war hammer* about with only one arm, but she hasn't gotten out of bed for a full year - is it reasonable to expect her out of bed at all?

I had a dwarf that didn't get out of bed for 5 years with just one red wound. It finally turned yellow at year 3.

Its random when things heal enough for the dwarf to leave the bed.

She'll never get out of bed. Dwarves currently suffer from phantom limb pain unfortunately.

Another dwarf will drag her to a new bed as thanks to the missing limb she will be eternally considered 'wounded'.

Yep, assign her as the Sheriff or to the Fortress\Royal Guard. That way she can't do any harm.

As mentioned, she will be in bed for ever, unless you use a cheat program to make her regrow the arm. Otherwise, the best use is as a guard/royal guard.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

but ... but it's not fair!  ???

I had a miner who walked around with only one hand, he wasn't troubled. Is this because she has lost more "bodyparts" or something? Her shoulder and all parts of the arm ... I suppose if she was tougher it wouldn't be a problem.

How do you raise the toughness of a bedridden dwarf? do I .. do I bridge-apult her at stuff? drop her into water?

The miner would have been alright due to being tough enough to ignore the phantom limb pain.

You can't raise the toughness of a bedridden dwarf; the only way to raise toughness is to raise stats, the only way to raise stats is to make them do jobs, and bedridden dwarves cannot do jobs.

You can't raise the toughness of a bedridden dwarf; the only way to raise toughness is to raise stats, the only way to raise stats is to make them do jobs, and bedridden dwarves cannot do jobs.

She will raise her stats or drown trying!  ;D

You could try assigning a meeting area right next to her /him.
I don't know if it is possible for a resting dwarf to engage in conversation, but I believe the gain of conversational skills is a passive process, that only requires proximity of another dwarf.

If it works, the dwarf will gain stats by tqalking, possibly also toughness.
Dwarven chatter is more intensive than Klingon it seems.

I don't think it's possible.

An engraver got bitten by zombies as he entered the map. He has been here for half a year in bed with a broken arm, in spite laying next to the one-armed chick (who it appears is really a guy) and being cared for - he doesn't know anyone. He doesn't even have a long-term acquaintance.
